One of the best parts about the Gnome Run has always been the opportunity for the community to reunite in one place, and on one server, every year. For those of us who have been part of the run since the start, or almost the start, it’s like returning to a familiar house in a hometown, nearly. Every year, we look forward to seeing familiar faces, friends, and online family log in. Not only are we raising funds for something that means so much to us, and getting an opportunity to hear from so many of you about your stories and families, but we’re getting a chance to really connect with all of you over the years. It’s part of what makes the Gnome Run such an exciting event. We’re able to communicate with the wide range of the Warcraft community we know and love, and see the best of them in their most generous and communal spirit. While the Gnome Run is about celebrating those who are still with us, it’s also about celebrating those we’ve lost. Many of you run in honor of your lost loved ones. This year, at the run and in our Discord, you may notice a new rank for two people. Honor Guard. We sadly lost two of the women who have been driving forces behind the Runs from the start, and two people who I deeply admired for their values that were foundational to how these events and Warcraft Cares grew. Eveaanyn and Talaan. We know that with how social media has changed and fractured, it’s easy to miss the passing of a beloved community member.

Their family members may decide to run in their honor at either event at times either this year or moving forward and we wanted to inform you in advance. In case you were logging into the event and were caught off guard while interacting with their Discord accounts or characters. Especially during the Gnome Run, while some people may be processing fears of loss or recent losses themselves, we didn’t want community members to realize mid-run that another pair of people, who had been so visible in their communities and events, had passed away. I acknowledge that this post is a bit late; both women were very dear to me, making it difficult because they were not just digital companions but people I knew in real life and had known for 15+ years. We wanted to take the time on the next slide to share about both of these incredible women and just some of the values they both share. I, and Warcraft, also wanted to invite all of you to share in the comments about a time they impacted your life. If you don’t know them, we wanted to invite you to share about a time someone in the community positively impacted your life. I am personally giving out Ascended Regalia Pack x 2 so their spirit can watch over players on adventures. Warcraft is giving out four Midnight Epic Editions so players can help carry their spirits forward into the next expansion and keep that brightness among all of us. Nyn aka Eveaanyn of /r/wow, Twitter, Livejournal, #WarcraftPositivity creator, and a multitude of other communities, passed away in January after a ferocious 8 year long battle with cancer. Nyn taught me a lot about being kind to everyone, welcoming others to join into things that they hadn’t done yet. She also was just…described by all as warm, and bright. The first time I met her it was like meeting the definition of what meeting an in-game battle priest would feel like. She possessed the kind of warmth that filled you up without even needing a hug. And I know she made other people feel that way. At the same time, she was a fierce defender of other people. She taught me to self-advocate when it came to disability and to advocate for others if I had the voice to. Her enthusiasm for new adventures, big or small, was always thrilling. It was actually Nyn gave me advice on picking charities that lead to The Pink Fund. Talaan, one of the founding members of the Gnome Run and an officer in <SeeD> of Scarlet Crusade when the run was created, an officer in House of the Valar on Icecrown a member of Society for Creative Anachronism, passed away due to complications with heart problems in June. In Wrath, we were sat across from one another in cubicles and we were shocked to learn we were both on Scarlet Crusade, and had pugged raids together. We were fast friends. She was whip smart, organized, quiet, but funny in a deadly way that made everyone laugh when she spoke. She loved a challenge in game, and everyone I spoke to always remembered the time she and her pet Turtle carried us through our first Heroic Sindragosa kill. Truly a hunter, she loved her animals and was an irl archer too. She gave me advice for organizing the runs that set them on the path that they were on. It was Talaan who the person who said “Making a that many pink shirts is a lot of work, maybe a pink haired race…” and thus, thanks to her wise words of caution and logistics, we were all Gnomes!

One thing that stood out to me about both of these women, even though Nyn had a passion for Battlegrounds and Talaan a passion for PvE, was that if someone needed help, an ear, or anything, they were there. Be it help in game, or help understanding how to do something, they always were willing to drop some time to listen and make their community better. They always showed up for others, and helped everyone else. If you’d like to make a donation in either’s honor there are organizations that both families have selected for them. Talaan’s partner has said that their local animal rescue, Greenhill Humane Society would be the perfect place to make a charitable contribution. Eveaanyn’s family selected Able Gamers and /r/wow set up a donation page for them. I will link those in the comments below!
