As many of you know, the first ever National Nature Assessment for the US began in 2024. This is the equivalent to the National CLIMATE Assessment in terms of the nation’s lands, fresh waters, and wildlife, including its ecosystems, biodiversity, and the benefits it provides for the economy, public health, and climate. Unfortunately, the National Nature Assessment was CANCELED shortly thereafter. However, many of the people involved in the NNA are NOT giving up on this. They have regrouped to continue this work on their own, privately funded, in what is now being called United By Nature, or UBN. We at Esri deeply appreciate how important this work is, and along with UBN’s leadership, are looking to develop a digital atlas…bringing to life, in dynamic web maps, the visuals and ideas contained within the UBN’s 15 chapters. And this would be similar to the recent 5th National Climate Assessment Atlas that is still online as an ArcGIS Hub (esriurl.com/nca5) even though government access to NCA5 has disappeared. UBN will be a community effort – something that many of you in the room can support with authoritative data, GIS expertise, and amazing cartographic skill.
