Poll: Capitalism is out … and socialism is in The movement is gaining popularity among Democrats, a left-leaning group found.

To be clear: this entire β€œwe’ve got to run more pro-lifers” insanity is because literally a week ago polling showed that Democrats would prefer politicians like AOC and Mamdani over Jefferies and Schumer by, let me emphasize this, a 20 point fucking margin.

i keep seeing people say that LLMs are good at search.

NO. WRONG.

You have just forgotten how good search used to be.

Google broke it's own flagship product, and so you are accepting a demented chatbot's half baked gishgallop because we no longer have functional web search.

Notable book release, Emily isn't just some garden-variety unqualified AI hater like me. She's an OG expert AI hater, and a co-author of the "Stochastic Parrots" paperβ€”published before ChatGPT was releasedβ€”that explained how and why LLMs were going to suck. dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/...

Predictive text models do not ever "answer your question"

They predict what an answer to your question would probably look like.

Which is very, very, very different

I know it's difficult because it's happening so frequently now, but never let them normalize attacking hospitals. It is unacceptable to attack patients who are seeking care. It is unacceptable to attack healthcare workers who are doing their jobs to save lives.

Israeli bombing turns Gaza into β€˜ball of fire’ as blackout adds to distress Israeli ground troops battle Hamas fighters in Gaza as Israel carries out heaviest air raids and cuts communications.

Communications are still spotty at best, but from Al Jazeera:

Almost 400 Palestinians were murdered in the β€œsafe zone” yesterday as Gaza was turned in a β€œball of fire”

It took journalist Fares Akram 12 hours to find out 18 of his extended family was murdered.

Photo looking through a wire fence at a mule deer, who is inside of the garden, looking back at me with a blandly confused expression on its face. Behind the deer are a bunch of tomato plants and corn and other things. A row of shovels, rakes, hula hoes and other tools line the fence.

I should probably post more here since twitter keeps getting worse and worse. here’s one of the five (!!!) audacious deer I chased out of my community garden this morning πŸ™„

c. Anarchy Background of Defend the Atlanta Forest
Anarchy is a philosophy that is opposed to forms of authority or hierarchy. Beginnings of anarchist ideals date back centuries, though usage of the term "anarchy" did not exist until the
1800s. Over time, various philosophical forms of anarchy have emerged. Numerous anarchist philosophies exist, though anarchists are not required to subscribe to one particular belief of
anarchy. Rather, the notion of anarchy, being grounded in an anti-authority mindset, primarily
targets government because it views government as unnecessarily oppressive. Instead of relying
on a modicum of government structure, anarchy relies on human association instead of
government to fulfill all human needs. Some of the major ideas that anarchists promote include
collectivism, mutualism/mutual aid, and social solidarity, and these same ideas are frequently
seen in the Defend the Atlanta Forest movement.

The indictment’s section entitled β€œAnarchy Background of the Defend the Atlanta Forest” reads like a high school book report on the history of anarchism and is reminiscent of political prosecutions of activists and radicals during the Red Scare: unicornriot.ninja/2023/over-60...

i’m not exactly a connoisseur when it comes to film and literature, but it still blows my mind that these guys all conceive of art as just an updated set of jingling keys dangling in front of their moron faces

How to clean the air from harmful wildfire smoke - Clean Air Crew Mitigate against wildfire smoke with N95 respirators, HEPA or MERV13 air filters, and tracking air quality near you.

If you're affected by wildfire smoke, (plenty from Canada and a lot in Oregon) take a gander at this info.
We get it here too and my angry lungs hate it. The Corsi-Rosenthal filter boxes are cheap and easy to make, but really do help.
I think this might be my PSA for now.

Two 3 year old sweet chestnut saplings. The larger one’s branches are growing at weird angles because it was growing sideways under the mat of weeds, but in this photo it is tied to two stakes and standing mostly straight up. It has several branches with large, oblong, serrated green leaves and is about 4 feet tall. The second sapling is very tiny and stunted because it was under such a thick mat of weeds. It’s only got a few leaves and is about 2 feet tall.
