We went to lunch with her again this June. Even though we had been before, it felt like both a first and a final visit. Everything was said. My dog (invited) was cuddled. We had a group photo with the giant smiling cut-out of Alex Hassall, who plays her hero Rupert Campbell-Black in the brilliant Disney+ series Rivals. Jilly understood how much we loved and admired her. I dedicated one of my books to her, for her bold and still-unmatched generosity in giving her own infertility story to her lead characters. She was brave, bold and unparalleled – and oh, how she was loved.

By me for the Tel: Five books if you’ve been under a rock and never encountered Jilly Cooper before (such deliciousness in store for you) - and a bit on how she was loved. www.telegraph.co.uk/books/author...

I adore this. When I read Rob's intro to ALIF detailing this story, I wrote back to his PR to say this was the second JC/TP interaction I knew of after The Jillies v The Morporkians on Only Connect! And that was how I ended up being invited to host some events for Rob on that book tour.

GNU Jilly Cooper. Jilly and dad were friends and the only person I’ve known to call him ‘Tel’. Hope they’re both having a big drink somewhere.

It’s been ten years since the publication of The Shepherd’s Crown, the last book Terry Pratchett completed before he died. Once the spine on this one was cracked, there were no more new Pratchetts to look forward to, and I know a lot of Discworld readers who were, understandably, with that sad reality in mind, reluctant to finish - or even start - this one because it felt like the final closing of a door.

But I also know that Terry wanted his books to be read and enjoyed far more than he wanted them kept on a shelf. And as time passes it becomes ever more apparent how much the Discworld books reward re-visiting, perpetually revealing something new, literary gems Terry had hidden away for a second or third, or even more, re-read. Every Pratchett is to some degree an unread Pratchett, including the ones you’ve already enjoyed and including The Shepherd’s Crown.

So the greatest way to honour Terry’s legacy is to pull that book you’ve been saving off the shelf, make a nice cup of tea and settle down to read the story he wrote for you. Enjoy.

In the final part of the performance, the musicians played more modern Creole songs, and the dancers invited people onto the dance floor. I'm usually too shy, but my feet led the way for me. A scanned black-and-white newspaper page featuring a short story titled “St Euston’s Day” by Uncle Jim, a pseudonym for Terry Pratchett. The story appears under a “Children’s Circle” header and recounts a whimsical tale about a fictional saint associated with the invention of the railway in 829 A.D. The text is printed in columns with a slightly faded, typewritten appearance. Below the story, there is a “Birthdays” section listing names and ages of young readers.

The story reads:

Children’s Circle
by UNCLE JIM

Dear Circle Members,

It’s not widely known that tomorrow is St Euston’s Day, when his followers commemorate the man who failed to invent the railway in A.D. 829. He failed somewhere.

Anyone who, on this day, wears their hat backwards and recites all the names of the stations on the Bakerloo Line is traditionally entitled to a silver sixpence and a return ticket to Maida Vale.

In memory of Saint Euston, the famous railway station — built where he supposedly had the idea — is really a railway cathedral. According to legend, if Euston Station is ever pulled down, no trains will ever again run in London. The underground monks who look after the railway will make sure of that.

No one has ever actually seen these monks, but if you have a good look round a place like Baker Street station, you’ll notice lots of small doors and passages that no one ever seems to use. Well, somebody must use them.

The electricity is cut off during part of the night, and no trains run. According to the story, people hear strange chanting and see lights moving far down the windy tunnels. The stations are changed, the light bulbs dim. Sometimes, at night, organ music comes out of the loudspeakers.

No one ever dares go and look. But if, on St Euston’s Day, you wear your hat back to front and can recite all the stations on the Bakerloo Line, there’s a chance you’ll receive a silver sixpence and a return ticket to Maida Vale.

So you never know.

Here's Terry Pratchett mastering the urban fantasy/hidden London genre in less than 500 words when he was just 17, in February 1966. "The idea of
people rushing round deep under the earth is dark and mysterious, and the monks want to make sure people remember that".
