A large wading bird (Sandhill Crane) is strutting through an urban parking lot next to an old building on its way to a nearby marsh. Its plumage is deep burnt orange, and it has long legs and a long neck with a white and red patch on top of its head.

#birds I’ve been struggling to get out and shoot photos these days. With the weather being so cold, wet, and dark, it’s taken a toll on my mental health. I know once the weather shifts and life gets a little less heavy, I’ll get back at it. In the meantime, here’s an old photo from Homer, Alaska

A pair of medium-sized seabirds, the Pigeon Guillemot, is swimming in murky water under a large dock. The male is engaging in a courtship ritual in which he makes direct eye contact while they both circle each other and perform synchronized swimming to create a bond.

Perched on a dead log in a murky pond is a small, rare female duck (Hooded Merganser). Her plumage consists of a white underbelly, dark wings, and a brown face resembling a hood. She is posed with part of her body facing the camera, while her head is slightly tilted down and looking to the right of the photo (her left). The water is mostly still and has a murky green color, which reflects the bird with about 60% clarity. The background is blurry with indications of nearby branches.

I've been meaning to post this sweet portrait of a female Hooded Merganser I photographed back in September, but I got distracted. Isn't she adorable?!

A large raptor (Red-Tailed Hawk) is perched in a tree. A few of our local crows were not happy and started dive-bombing the Hawk until it eventually flew away.

An unexpected guest showed up in front of our house, and the crows were NOT hav’n it!

A medium-sized wading bird (Green Heron) is perched on a curved, dead branch above the water below. Its feathers are wet and its posture slightly hunched after a failed attempt to catch a fish. I don't believe it's actually upset, but its body language appears to tell a different story. Its plumage is a vibrant combination of brown, white, and blue-green. It has bright yellow eyes and legs, and a muted blue-grey bill.

Observe, the Green Heron, a master of stealth, now humbled. After a series of fruitless lunges, its emerald plumage seems to droop, a feathered embodiment of dashed hopes in this unforgiving theatre of survival. The elusive fish, today, has won.

A large wading bird (Great Blue Heron), female, is perched up in a tree, resting on one leg (not pictured). The camera, exposed for the bird in shadow, creates a solid white background against an overcast morning sky. A few bright green leaves from the tree are surrounding her head on the upper-right side of the image. I intentionally cropped the photo so that half of her lower body is out of frame to better focus on her expression. Her plumage is primarily grey with blues and whites. She has yellow eyes and a long, yellow and grey-blue bill that comes to a sharp point. As a side note, this photo was not edited other than a crop and a bit of saturation to slightly pop the birds' colors forward.

She was peacefully resting up in the tree with her head tucked into her breast, yet no matter how slowly I tiptoed, she kept lifting her head, giving me this look, like, "dude, c'mon"

A small bird (Belted Kingfisher), male, is captured mid dive as it attempts to catch a fish from the water below (not pictured). The bird has its wings spread wide and its mouth open, letting out a very distinct call that everyone can hear from quite a distance. Its colors are predominantly blue, with black wing tips, a white stripe around its neck, and a beautiful white pattern on its wings that appears only when the wings are open.
