went to The Phantom of the Opera tonight with last minute Monday eve tickets and man, the part where the flickering electric chandelier slowly ominously crawls up towards the upper circle while the synth just goes to town and it's in like the first seven minutes still! slaps! what a theatre!!

I don't know - I had a lot of fun and great memories of playing poker for raisins with my grandparents, going to wineries with my mother and then-fiance-now-husband, beer weekends in Brussels with friends, etc. Again I am not saying this is the right answer, just not inconsistent with social norms

It's basically in line with how we treat alcohol and (eg, where legal) THC, isn't it? Not to say it's necessarily the right approach, but observing as a society we are comfortable saying "this is delicious, ?addictive and ?harmful, Grownups can have it because we can Handle it, not for You Children"

This weekend we saw both MALCOLM X (1993) and THE TESTAMENT OF ANN LEE (2025) in cinema. Both excellent & it was remarkable how much the latter took its idiom from the former - not derivative, just impressed how much Spike Lee established a language and style that are still in use 30+(!) years later

poster for the sopranos in the style of disney's "that's so raven". pink velvet background with a scowling tony soprano covering most of it, arms crossed. in the bottom left there is the logo:

disney
that's SO
PRANOS

the "so / pranos" is in the sopranos font

Showing My Age TM but I remember the same kind of bubbling joyfulness watching Michelle Kwan at Nagano 1998 - like both the non-strained feel of the technical capability, but also those little flourishes that really aren't there for any other reason than this person is having Fun! Movement is fun!!

Haven Watch is the group that meets people who are being released from Whipple (usually because they were illegally detained), often without coats or phones or any way to get home.

Accidentally started a Red February theme this month so I guess we're just going to keep rolling with it

In 1987 a UK record producer would take this idea and release 4 platinum albums

They do this in Australia (or Melbourne at least) in some pubs and it's such a good kind of place to have in society honestly!

Dutch speed skating gold medallist Jens van 't Wout is 24 years old, and has the haircut and general mien of a composite of every boy in the soccer team at my Oregon high school in 2002

Friday night rewatch of THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER (1990), that translation zoom in and out is so good! so effortless, so confident, so fun! Like, stating the obvious but man that John McTiernan is good at using the language of cinema to tell you what's goin on

watched the HEATED RIVALRY finale, switched to the live team free skate, then ofc had to watch the Tessa Virtue/Scott Moir 2018 medal routine, overall a great evening for deeply horny ice skating

Was just talking just about this! In context of how some people on work calls turn on the Teams "soft focus"/smoothing filter - either always on, or in place of "office makeup" when WFH. Literally telling the high definition machine "not that much definition thanks"
