For me the problem was less the bells than the math. That said, I really enjoyed the book more when I committed to skimming over pretty much every mention of the b-word. Great book but took me time to appreciate.

I recommend skipping either to Clouds of Witness or Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club. The book in between (Unnatural Death) is quite strange- I think worth checking out but if it throws you after CoW then skip to tUatBC and go back to it later. IMO tUatBC is in her top three books.

I took out Whose Body and Clouds of Witness at the same time and very nearly DNFed WB and almost returned CoW to the library unread. I read it bc it was there and now LOVE the series, and have done both London and Oxford walking tours of sites as well as visited her archive of papers in Illinois.

I think bullying per se relies at minimum on the person saying the thing intending for the target to know they are saying it. I have other unpleasant words to describe this person though.

Oh yeah I didn't mean the book would be scary, just that it would probably talk a lot about movies I haven't seen- but fair point, and will take a look!

Oh nice! This is one of like three scary movies I actually like so while I may not check out the book I’ll see if I can get my hand on the chapter 😀

Incidentally, it also makes me believe Elsa Lanchester that Laughton rewrote/didn't use James Agee's script because SO MUCH of the best dialogue from the movie is literally quoted from the book.

Question- have you read the book? It's really remarkable- in some ways it makes me appreciate the movie more because it makes clear how good Laughton was at translating Davis Grubb's authorial vision and tone because it is SO SO similar while also making some great choices in its differences.

I will also note- people talk about the "bloc vote" like it is/was a bogey man when all it was was pragmatic voting. Essentially a local interest group. With the decline of pragmatic voting and an increase in Trumpism/ideological voting in the community, the bloc vote has nearly died.

I mean, it's how fewer and fewer think. The whole framing of the article is that this askan did something in endorsing Mamdani that shocked the rest of the community.

Pragmatism is still somewhat part of frum politics (quite reasonably, as it is for many people) but MUCH less so than it used to be.

When my grandfather died six months ago I spent the next few months digging up every photo/video I had of him (and my grandmother) whether on my phone, on other people's phones/on chats, in albums, in his house that we were readying for sale... they're all favorited and I look at them all the time

Also why didn’t Gruber fake a hostage situation earlier if only to get McClane off the radio, it’s not like he was giving any clues away to them

Trying to place where a relative by marriage grew up- I’d have assumed De Vimy but he says Outremont- would someone say Outremont if they grew up in De Vimy bc it’s more familiar to outsiders?

Also the food thing is absolutely absurd, it means you can force people to be vegetarian for health reasons but if you say it's bc you're Hindu or Sikh then nope.

(Question, does the frum community look at the more chassidish part and the more yeshivish part as being separate areas? That was the impression I had when visiting but I can't figure out if it's just that I was clueless or if they actually are)
