I like serial commas, fireflies, bold patterns, cities, advice columns, long walks, museums, menus, learning about a lot of things and teaching about some. Always thinking about my next meal. She/her.

DC folks ⬇️ If you're bored this (maybe) rainy weekend, you could call local businesses that are selling the vehicles that ICE is using to terrorize and murder us in our neighborhoods.

I get yelled at for saying this but for many hundreds of years people went to university not to get diplomas or be employable but because immersion in the humanities was considered foundational to a good life, and school must return to its original purpose: the joy of learning.

I would argue they knew exactly what they were doing, which was deliberately sabotaging needed public works programs by offering snake oil they never had any intention of delivering.

Yeah, I have friends who are mystified by the β€œGo Blue”s. They say, β€œI mean, I recognize when someone’s wearing a shirt from my college, too, but I don’t yell at them in the street about it!”

So many U-M in my neighborhood on upper NW that the neighbors joke about Wolverine sightings when there are unknown animals running around.

Wouldn't it be great if thousands of us called their sales managers, letting them know that we will collectively never ever ever even think about buying a car from them? Ever. Fuck Collaborators.

Anyway,
Darcars is (301) 622-0300 & Ourisman is (301) 249-4227.

I am once again tapping the "support independent, worker-owned, billionaire free news" sign. the most powerful people in the world should not be deciding whether or not we know about this sort of thing. putting Marisa's subscription link below

Somebody once told me
His works, he'd like to show me
He thought they'd fill me with awe and dread

He was looking kind of dumb
Just two legs out in the sun
And his visage a broken stone head

a public utility does not need to turn a profit. this is intentional.

It’s tiring that we are increasingly stuck organizing our intellectual lives around arguing for the value of having an intellectual life

This is a good analogy. Very useful in carefully controlled settings for specific usages, but unfortunately being widely inserted into everything and used without training or PPE and poisoning a lot of things and people and we’re going to pay a tonne of money to remove it safely in the future

For years on my old blog I published the names of servicemembers who died in Iraq & Afghanistan. No other outlets were.

These are the first 4 Americans to die in the Iran War.
Capt. Cody A. Khork, 35
Sgt. 1st Class Noah L. Tietjens, 42
Sgt. 1st Class Nicole M. Amor, 39
Sgt. Declan J. Coady, 20

It's so galling that universities are collections of scholars yet university administrations rarely consult their own faculty about anything they could farm out to McKinsey

American Jews have been TRYING to tell folks that yes, AIPAC is evil, & fuck them, but Christian Zionists in the US outnumber Jews IN THE WORLD & have risen to power in all areas of our government, & they want to bring the End Times (& kill all the Jews btw), AND THIS IS WHAT WE WERE TALKING ABOUT.

This is an incredible team and project and I have never subscribed to anything so fast. Remember a few days ago when everyone was like "support independent media"?? Now is your chance to support and read really thoughtful writing about how culture workers live & make things in this economy.

literally your customer base was 90% parents of young children who want a good future for their kids in which they can be free to be themselves, no matter who they are. you told those people to go fuck themselves. they won't be back

We have no idea how MPD is working with federal immigration authorities because MPD is deliberately not collecting that data. The FAAR Act would require them to collect it. It is an essential bill to protect immigrants in DC from federal abuse. The Council should pass it today

The Artistic Journey:

2021: celebrated as I published one of the best books of my career.

2025: watched Anthropic steal it, with millions of others, to train its model, without compensation.

2026: watched Anthropic sell that model, an AI killing machine, to the US government.

Human progress!

This is reminding me that I need to make this again. Absolutely worth the effort, and you know Deb isn’t going to make you do extra work for nothing.

Burn It All Down Michigan's athletic department is implicated in yet another sexual assault scandal. It's long past time for change and it must start at the top.

I'm just saying: it's never been easier to "work in education" without having any of that work take place in an actual classroom or school

And I don't believe this is a good thing for students

What feels like a pretty clear trend over the last 25 years: more and more adults working in education but not in actual schools

What we have zero evidence of: students and schools being better off as a result of this

A coworker uses Eat My Books for this and loves it. Sometimes it recommends something out of, like, a Thomas Keller book you'd never cook from in day-to-day life, but even seeing, "Oh, huh, yeah, I guess mango and white chocolate do pair well together, and cilantro would add something" is helpful.
