Who on here will be in Chicago next weekend for #ASA2025? It's been about seven years since I was a regular attendee and I am a bit nervous I've become estranged from the US scene 🫣 (thankful for that in general, but if these meetings are as large as they were pre-COVID...😬)

What a politically complicated thing to wish...sign of dystopic times. I teach in the UK where the public/private divide is dissimilar to the US. We are thankfully neither private, nor under such* extreme state-based repression of knowledge (although that is happening here against gender theory).

We'll use the moment to imagine liberatory alternatives together and really centre the violence enabled by carceral feminisms and in the name of protecting women/"the vulnerable".

This week, we'll think through texts from Elizabeth Bernstein, Sharmila Parmanand as well as a 2020 article from myself, Liat Ben-Moshe and H Rakes to look at how feminists have bolstered carceral protectionist methods that secure trafficking while purporting to fight for its end.

Last wk in my course Abolitionist & Anticarceral Feminisms, we discussed carceral spatial politics + focused on Gilmore & Walia to assess criminalisation as an instrument of state-sanctioned human trafficking. It was great to think abt this with the "illegalisation" of migration. So many 💡s went off
