Piggybacking on this to boost a session I'm organizing that very much wants to hear from contingent faculty! mla.confex.com/mla/2027/web...

I lose my teaching tone every summer.

(my second hand copy of the book is part of a "queer literature" series--score one for different publishing apparatuses producing different texts! )

I love the PBS series, and it's faithful in my memory--hence me feeling confused about that language that kind of suggests they're two different things?

Lots going on in that "Companion to the PBS TV series"...

Who among us has not tried to use paperclips as hair ties?

This is brilliant.

How does one write a scholarly book in the face of the conviction that no one reads scholarly books?

Congratulations!!

Mostly the internet is bad, but I just read a review of a Rancho Gordo bean varietal that described it as having "main character energy," so I think I'll probably stick around.

No, I think you could enter France on either!

I believe you have to reenter the US on your US passport.

Reposting for the Friday crowd...

This is the problem (which I'm not blaming the journalists for!). I can get nearly a whole newspaper subscription for the price of one substack!

(I admit that I don't know details of the Google-university deals that let them digitize the books in the first place, I just know that for a number of years I could search Googlebooks and see pages and page #s, and then that got taken away)

I'm happy to just blame Google here and not universities: I think every day about how individuals lost access to already scanned books in GoogleBooks years ago, yet Google got to train their AI on them.

(I don’t mean to be an apologist for these insulting emails!!)

The most generous read on this is that it’s probably for the best if they’re not trying to hire middle aged men to tutor their 14 year old….

As a person who’s spent decades trying to decide whether to call my hair brown or black in my driver’s license, looks like I have my answer!

oh, I’ve always assumed these just went to everyone in my department, but you probably have a point..

I am once more alarmed to find that I have A LOT to say about Ezra Pound.

Law & Lit folks (and others): where can I go read more about the outdated legal phrase "To all of whom these presents shall come, Greetings"?

25.02.2026 16:42 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 1

Absolutely!

It is the highest form of compliment for me to say I've been finding this series of episodes so stimulating I cannot listen them before bed.

My (not) proudest parenting moment is not taking my kid to the ER because I knew they were going to insist on giving him stitches and we (briefly) had no insurance.
