this one fucked me up so much. guy turns his life around after a drug conviction, becomes a happy, beloved, pet rescuing houseboat dad who undersells his mechanic services so poor folks can afford them. ICE grabs him one day out of the hospital for heart problems which then kill him. horrifying

It cannot be stressed enough how these Republicans don’t see government jobs as jobs at all. They see them as titles, no-show gigs where they can do whatever they want. That’s why they hated the people in those jobs before, they thought it was a scam because they don’t believe in doing the work.

The thrill Trump gets from having people blow up & kill other people, and from watching other people fight at UFC, comes from deep insecurity rooted in his personal cowardice. It makes him feel tough. It makes him feel adequate. Things he has never been but always wanted to be.

A big part of the authoritarian playbook is war. War takes over the news. War blots out criticism. War divides a nation’s people, subjecting those against it to being called unpatriotic. War grants leaders all sorts of emergency powers. War consumes everything else.

We mustn’t let this war do so.

As a historian, I'd just like to remind the politicians who follow me that it is not, in fact, 2003 anymore and the current GOP war in the Middle East is not, in fact, even remotely popular.
