'We're female professors, here's why we think Dundee University has a women problem' Professors Angela Daly and Annalu Waller say Dundee University is destroying its commitment to gender equality in STEM.

The University of Dundee has a women problem

β€œIn our view this culture of sexism runs deeper than the sidelining of women speaking up and out and persists beyond the ignominious end of Iain Gillespie’s tenure as Principal of the university.”

oh hey, government, this is why you SORT OUT THE FUNDING SYSTEM for universities alongside getting governance sorted. Because otherwise you're going to have to keep throwing good money after bad. Because we all know you cannot afford a university *actually* going under, however ballsy you sound.

The English higher education market is broken New regulator powers should include the ability to claw back pay from vice-chancellors in the event of financial catastrophe

Hard to argue with the headline, though debatable use of the word market, and the analysis is a bit superficial.

DAVID CLEGG: The rot in Dundee’s leadership runs deeper than the university The Courier's editor David Clegg criticises the "culture of secrecy" gripping Dundee institutions beyond the crisis-hit university.

www.thecourier.co.uk/fp/opinion/5... "Let’s not pretend these are isolated blunders. This is a pattern – a public sector culture where too many in charge act like they’re above the rules. Paid with your money. Protected by the press office. Answerable to no one."

Absolutely infuriating that this is the end point of vastly inflated salaries for Vice Chancellors and other top admin whose obsence pay raises at a time of pension cuts were always justified on the grounds that only they could manage the new era of competitive marketized higher education.

The letter suggests that executives submitted inaccurate responses during the auditing process.

Redundancies Are Not the Solution
The VS scheme. Course closures. Promotion deferral. Deletion of course combinations.
Redundancies. These have been some of the University's highlights for the past 1.5 years.
Taken together, these actions represent a sustained and escalating attack on the livelihoods
of dedicated staff at LHU and the integrity of the country's HE sector as a whole. None of these
β€˜solutions’ have made or will ever make LHU financially sustainable in the long-term. These are
short-sighted and unjust initiatives that have eroded and will continue to erode the trust and
morale of the very people who have committed their lives and careers to the mission of LHU:
to inspire and support students from all walks of life and, crucially, to educate students in the
round - i.e., to show them that learning is a quest for truth, honesty, and goodness.
Redundancies may save some money in the short-term but universities around the country
are consistently and repeatedly underestimating

extremely insightful report from Liverpool Hope about the financial state of the university and the long-term risks posed by the course closures and redundancies.

STABLE FUNDING.

The experiment of having the country's higher education and research reliant on the volatility of student fees, AND removing any predictability by removing the student number distribution clearly doesn't work.
