The first step in building the new Cardiff university has been cuts of around 280 academic jobs and at least a dozen programmes, mostly from the arts and humanities, in a four-month manufactured crisis

The University of Dundee has a women problem
βIn our view this culture of sexism runs deeper than the sidelining of women speaking up and out and persists beyond the ignominious end of Iain Gillespieβs tenure as Principal of the university.β

REDUNDANCIES PROCESS CONTINUES
This is a follow up to our post on Tuesday regarding the interim-Principal stating "There won't be any redundancies" in an STV interview
Prof Seaton has clarified his remarks by stating that he meant "There will be no redundancies related to the recovery plan". 1/3

28.06.2025 04:26 β π 4 π 2 π¬ 0 π 0oh hey, government, this is why you SORT OUT THE FUNDING SYSTEM for universities alongside getting governance sorted. Because otherwise you're going to have to keep throwing good money after bad. Because we all know you cannot afford a university *actually* going under, however ballsy you sound.

The results of the De Montfort university UCU branch's formal No Confidence ballot have now been confirmed: a resounding 90% voted no confidence in the VC and the ULB
This is the fourth significant No Confidence vote passed during the current round of proposed redundancies
Another Β£40m for University of Dundee from Scottish govt. Underlines how bad things are there - but canβt help feeling other Scottish unis would have liked a share of the Β£62m now handed to Dundee when they were cutting jobs, etc www.timeshighereducation.com/news/dundee-...

Hard to argue with the headline, though debatable use of the word market, and the analysis is a bit superficial.

We are extremely concerned by the letter from Ernst and Young, auditors at the University of Dundee.
The letter suggests that executives submitted inaccurate responses during the auditing process.

Redundancies Are Not the Solution The VS scheme. Course closures. Promotion deferral. Deletion of course combinations. Redundancies. These have been some of the University's highlights for the past 1.5 years. Taken together, these actions represent a sustained and escalating attack on the livelihoods of dedicated staff at LHU and the integrity of the country's HE sector as a whole. None of these βsolutionsβ have made or will ever make LHU financially sustainable in the long-term. These are short-sighted and unjust initiatives that have eroded and will continue to erode the trust and morale of the very people who have committed their lives and careers to the mission of LHU: to inspire and support students from all walks of life and, crucially, to educate students in the round - i.e., to show them that learning is a quest for truth, honesty, and goodness. Redundancies may save some money in the short-term but universities around the country are consistently and repeatedly underestimating
extremely insightful report from Liverpool Hope about the financial state of the university and the long-term risks posed by the course closures and redundancies.

STABLE FUNDING.
The experiment of having the country's higher education and research reliant on the volatility of student fees, AND removing any predictability by removing the student number distribution clearly doesn't work.
