Age verification laws were the wedge used to drive barriers to access and surveillance. Those who argued along the lines of β€œwe have age verification for alcohol sales, why not for internet?” were an inconvenient distraction from the real harms.

In a significantly weirder case, "Sleeping Lady with Black Vase" is a 1928 oil painting by RΓ³bert BerΓ©ny. It was lost in WWII, and considered looted by the Nazis and likely destroyed afterwards in the chaos... until someone recognized it as set dressing in the movie "Stuart Little."

Yes, really.

Albany St project to go ahead - over budget Dunedin's much-debated Albany St cycling and walking link will proceed. The project made it through an 8-7 vote at the Dunedin City Council today...

Big first meeting for the incoming council, and heartening to see a majority of them understand that streets are for people.

Absolutely horror IPCA report on how the Police handled complaints against McSkimming.

A woman, who said she had a sexual relationship with him when she was 21 and he was 40, made complaints about him and instead of taking it seriously they prosecuted her under the HDCA.

Just seems a little short while ago that various government politicians, and people acting as their media surrogates, were outraged and scandalized by, and poured scorn on, comments from younger women politicians for suggesting many people don't trust cops.

Highest levels of the force - filth.

NZ needs to have a β€˜mature conversation’ about selling state assets, PM says Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has indicated asset sales could be included in National’s manifesto for the 2026 election.

In fact, I think a truly mature conversation would actually assess some of our many past asset sales and consider whether re-nationalising some of those assets might be in the country's interest.

But that's definitely not the conversation he wants.
