Manzanitas (Ericaceae: Arctostaphylos spp.) are commonly found in arid shrublands and woodlands of western North America. Made up of dozens of species, these woody plants grow as bushes or small trees. Once pollinated the pink flowers become red fruit. Great Basin National Park, Nevada, 19 May 2016.

I love that hahah
I already loved plants but it was more of a hobby and didn’t get really into botany until I moved to Lexington to attend UK. But I’ve found community here, and a career path that will likely take me away from here but maybe back to WI at some point. Funny how things work :)

It does! I just finished the book yesterday and it was wonderful. I’m born and raised in the Midwest, in Wisconsin, and just went back to visit a week and a half ago. We spent time in the central sand hills region botanizing and birdwatching (mostly for whooping cranes!!), so that book speaks to me

Just finished Braiding Sweetgrass this morning, after working my way through it the last 6 months or so. I’m about to start Sand County Almanac, just before my trip back home to Wisconsin. I’m excited to start my conversations with that book πŸ’—
