I don't know if this is well known, but he told me that at one time he'd house-shared with a woman who was corresponding with someone who claimed to be Pynchon, and eventually visited, and as far as Groening knew, was TP. That's how I remember the story. Which makes 2 people I've met who've met TP.

Footnote: in September 1989 I interviewed Matt Groening in his office on the Fox lot. He had just seen the first episode of the Simpsons back from the animators and was in deep despair because it was awful, so we didn't talk about the Simpsons. Mostly we discussed Life in Hell, and Thomas Pynchon.

Back in August several academics raised concerns that a Deloitte report to government may have been generated using AI. Deloitte denied this and put the citation errors down to poor editing.

Anyway, Deloitte are refunding the government $440,000 for a report that was written using AI.

The talk was excellent, and the junior classicist got to meet Mary Beard and have three books signed, and was completely tongue-tied for the only time I can remember in fifteen years.

She's an excellent communicator, though so far the talk's been heavy on historical anecdote and light on context or insight. But I get the sense she balances it based on the perceived level of the audience, so... Second half about to start.

Of to Richmond with the junior classicist, to hear Mary Beard lecture. A decent way to spend a Sunday.
