I'd want to try it face-to-face first of all, to iron out the lumps in the format. But I think the heart of it is the face-to-face play, and having people who know the game in the room to make sure you're doing it right, and who you can ask for clarifications and help if you get stuck.

Here's an idea. If I could find a space and offer hands-on intro/tuition sessions on the great classic card and board games, three or four games an evening over several weeks, who would be interested? I'm talking rummy, bridge, bezique, backgammon, go, etc.

Was thinking about that workshop the other day, as it happens. Great to know you're still working on designs. Let me know how it goes.

NEW. This is an elementary girls school in the city of Hormozgan in Iran.

In the last hour, it was hit by a US/Israeli missile attack.

So far, 24 young girls are confirmed dead [SOURCE: Al Jazeera].

The US has just committed a war crime.

When I did activist training back in the neolithic era we were taught "don't give them an easy reason to dislike you: always push leaflets right through the letterbox, always carefully close gates"

The 21st century version of this, @libdems.org.uk, is USE ALT TEXT. It's not difficult.

That meme is never not relevant.

Footnote: 1829 was the direct inspiration for Sid Meier's Railroad Tycoon, the videogame he designed before Civilization... which was also based on a Francis Tresham design, Civilization (1980).

Well, 'greatest' is a matter of opinion--and size. 1829 and its sister 1829: Northern Board (released 1981) were the only two ever released in long-boxes.

That's on my wants list--I love the work of the Rahman Brothers, and have a copy of Down With The King on my shelf, where I'm afraid it's likely to stay, as I can't see ever finding willing bodies to play it with me.

like this, fifty-year-old limited-edition games, not just an artefact but a fascinating experience on the table (7.0 BGG rating, three levels of complexity) on sale for Β£40... to me it says two things: we massively undervalue our culture and the games that made us, and we underprice them too.

The only problem is that it has a lot of cards, and fifty-something years ago someone used rubber bands to secure them, and the rubber has perished and stuck to many of the cards. A minor blemish that shouldn't affect playability at all. But the fact you can find pieces of games history (cont.)

Gorgeous longbox format, great condition apart from tape on one corner. Two rulebooks provided, for clarity; I love the manifesto-like quality of its opening paragraphs. Hartland Trefoil games were numbered: this is box 004250, number 250 of the third printing (not the fourth, no, it's complicated)

Look at this beauty! Francis Tresham's 1829, first and greatest of the 18XX railway games, first edition (third printing), from 1974. This is one of the 'proto-Euros', games that anticipate elements of the German game renaissance of the 1980s despite being released years, sometimes decades earlier.

In four or five years of reviewing, I I think the magazine sent me a game I was already planning to buy... once. (It was Res Arcana.) The rest of the time, games for review are often not to your taste and in a lot of cases they're not very good.

When I was writing for it, Tabletop Gaming paid Β£30 for a half-page review. Understanding a game, getting it to table (with 2-3 people), playing it, evaluating it and writing the review is about half a day's work. Would you do half a day's work for Β£30? Or does it not cover pizza for the players?

Dear Lucy
On the eve of the by-election, your Labour party spokesperson has admitted to the Huffington Post that a
Labour party leaflet has been delivered through doors with your imprint recommending a vote for Labour
by a tactical voting organisation which does not exist.
This is deeply troubling, it is actually lying to voters. Did you approve this? Do you feel the Labour Party
in government should be held to different standards in terms of honesty to the British public?
In your last letter to me you mentioned your β€˜very extensive data’ and β€˜having spoken to over a third of
eligible voters’ which led you to an understanding that the by election β€˜was a contest between labour and
Reform’. Clearly this latest development only tells voters one thing - you will employ any type of
political deception (or in Urdu β€œDhoka” ) to win.
You will be very aware that all three real tactical voting organisations are recommending a vote for the
Greens as the best way to stop Reform. Lying to the voters, as you have been caught doing, raises the real
prospect that Reform will be the beneficiaries, something you have said that you don’t want.
As this is such an important issue, for the sake of your own reputation, I would strongly urge you to
apologise to the voters of Denton and Gorton before the polls open in the morning.”
Kind regards,
Zack Polanski
Leader of the Green Party of England and Wales

Dear @lucympowell.bsky.social,

Why did you invent a fake tactical voting company to stop the Green Party beating Reform?

I'm starting to think your letters haven't always been in good faith...

Oh, don't know who needs to hear this, but the American Max Headroom series is back up on Tubi. Don't sleep on some of the best SF of the 80s (which got roundly mocked because it was so ridiculous and as I look around, nope, it got more right than wrong.)
