December 2025 through February 2026 was the 2nd warmest winter on record for the Contiguous U.S. according to Prism climate data. The widespread record to near record warmth in the west easily outweighed the cool temps in the east. 🔥🔥🔥

Record high winter temperatures and ongoing snow drought are leaving New Mexico with a fraction of its typical snow pack and at higher risk of wildfire, even after accounting for February storms, according to a recent briefing from NOAA scientists.

Skied into our research site in the Southern Sierra. It was nice to get out, but terrifying how little snow is on the ground. In a normal year we would have had to shovel our way into that cabin.

New Mexico's snowpack is sitting at just 38% of normal right now, the second lowest on record to date. Records go back to 1987. The worst year to date was in 2018 when it was at 28% of normal. #NMwx

The warmth in Albuquerque over the past four months has been remarkable and a bit alarming. Each month has ranked among the top five warmest on record. Taken together, this October through January period was nearly 3° warmer than the previous warmest period. #NMwx

Rode 9 mi to the train station to head up to the capital and put some of the tech we’re using for measuring fuel moisture, microclimate, and surface temp on display for state lawmakers. Rolled up the sport coat in a plastic bag so it could ride in the pannier. Glad I didn’t need a full on suit.
