8 years on.
Still far from justice.
Still far from peace.
Today, we will stand shoulder to shoulder with the Grenfell bereaved, survivors and community.
We will remember the 72 people who died.
We will honour their memory.
We will demand justice 💚
Join us on the silent walk.

Britain’s new-build nightmare
How the dream of home ownership ran into the reality of an under-regulated market.
✍️ "The post-Grenfell building safety crisis uncovered fire safety flaws in high-rise blocks, landed leaseholders with life-ruining bills to fix them and stalled flat sales. Is the new-build betrayal Britain’s next housing time bomb?"

The research also looked closely at geographical mobility.
Across all regions, migration from one region to another is linked to higher earnings on average.
However, young people eligible for free school meals only benefited from this trend in London and the East of England.

But there are big differences in outcomes for the poorest young people within the same region too, depending on the specific area they're from.
We found drastic inequalities of opportunity across the South East of England, which is typically thought of as a prosperous region.

📊 East Ham is ranked as the top constituency for opportunity, with Newcastle Upon Tyne Central and West lowest.
They have very similar levels of free school meal eligibility (37% and 35% respectively) but the difference in prospects for social mobility between the two is stark.

Only 8 of the top 50 constituencies providing the best opportunities for young people are outside the capital.
The North East and North West are overrepresented among the lowest ranked areas, but the South East has the biggest gaps between areas.

A high-rise fire killed Catherine. The cladding firm kept on selling
A London inferno 16 years ago killed Catherine Hickman and five others. Now a Sunday Times investigation raises serious questions about materials used on the flats
The Grenfell inquiry told us how three manufacturers lied.
Today's revelations in @thetimes.com spell out how misleading marketing was not limited to three bad actors.
The cladding and building safety crisis is becoming Britain’s biggest corporate scandal.

Once again it is journalists who are getting to the heart of just how big the #BuildingSafetyScandal is.
How product manufacturers distance themselves from the consequences of their dangerous products.
And just how easy it is from them to get away with it.

Cladding scandal: 'Innocent people like me face the risks and costs'
One day in January 2020, NHS worker Rachael Loftus was surprised to find a man in a high visibility jacket standing outside her flat complex in Leeds.
🗣️ “Part of the problem seems to be that the deregulation of the building industry has meant that those bad actors who cut corners have been getting away with it for far too long and it’s just become how they operate.

Flat owner hit with £65,000 fire safety bill as block too short for funding
Funding to protect flats from fire does not apply to buildings under 11m (36ft) or five storeys high.
The building safety scandal was caused by decades of systemic negligence, incompetence & deception, by successive governments & industry.
Can @alexjjnorris.bsky.social explain why ordinary people have been left to face bankruptcy? 👇

not prioritising safety
"Gap between the prices of houses and flats in the UK has widened to a 30-year high"
"The average price of a house rose beyond 1.5 times the price of a flat for the first time in 2021, in the wake of the UK’s cladding crisis"

Building Safety Remediation: monthly data release - January 2025
The 87th monthly data release regarding building safety remediation.
For what it's worth, the latest building safety stats are out.
❌ The data is still full of holes and still painting half a picture (at best).
❌ MHCLG still "monitoring" with no meaningful oversight.
❌ Leaseholders & residents still waiting for the Govt to get a grip.

'While it might be tempting to blame officials and accounting rules, the root causes of these problems are political. Pressures on the NHS increase each year [...] meaning government investment needs to increase just to stand still.'
Hugh Alderwick, Director of Policy at the Health Foundation
Responding to the Public Accounts Committee report on NHS financial sustainability published today, Hugh Alderwick says the short-termism and dysfunction in financial planning identified will come as no surprise to those working in the health system.

Me too. I really think we need a national debate on what we all think is important - then task policy makers etc to figure out how to fund it.
