Isabel's characterisation didn't bother me & I thought Eva's was absolutely brilliant, really complex. The end descended into fairly trad romance but I absolutely wanted that closure! I'm probably influenced by the fact that the audiobook was so well read.

I've just finished the (brilliantly read) audiobook. I thought it was extraordinarily good. The period was so well evoked. The characters just leapt off the page. What were your reservations?

1908: the Lancet, one of the most respected scientific journals, calls for 18 age limit on reading in bed amidst a moral panic surrounding children becoming "addicted" to novels, which were "designed to keep kids hooked" and destroy their attention/mental health

So happy that my next book - & debut novel - will be published by @manillapress.bsky.social in July 2026. A TINY SPECK OF BLACK AND THEN NOTHING, set in Japan in the early 2000s, is the story of two young friends - a nightclub hostess & a school teacher - & what happens when one of them disappears.

Years ago I read Cheever's diaries. Compulsive. I always remember a bitter line about his wife: 'Mary sits downstairs marking Freshman essays for her pleasure'. So nasty! Also, that every handsome delivery boy was a loaded gun to his head.

I read Updike's story 'Pigeons' a while ago & found it incredibly dated. Whereas Cheever has that extra otherworldly lift. Love 'The Swimmer'.

Rosenberg, the son of Holocaust survivors, believed in the Zionist project until a visit to Israel in the late 1960s revealed “a land filled with violence, injustice, and hatred”.
