Darras Hall is known as footballer territory. It was when I was a kid. But those houses have been bulldozed and these monstrosities built!

My copy arrived this weekend. Looking forward to reading it! 🏏

The only alternative would have been to furlough all university staff and just not have higher education for a couple of years. Imagine the response to that!

If you find a good recipe, let me know. Our NM cookbooks are still at my parents' house.

The students claiming uni Covid compensation 'for the principle' Dozens of universities have received legal letters over what students say they missed out on during Covid.

This is causing despair in academe. (1) We were forced to close during Covid. We had no choice! (2) We're not service providers like a restaurant, we are institutions of state. (3) We did everything we could. (4) This will cripple current students' education.

I used to enjoy posole (not sure how to describe it, sort of a stew) and enchiladas. Biggest decision used to be which of chili (sometimes written as chile in NM) to have.

I laughed when I saw this response... As someone who lived in NM as a kid, we were v aware that it was NOT Mexico and the food was NOT Mexican:

Indeed, here in the news, we keep being reminded that he is still 8th in line to the throne and is also a Counsellor of State (which means he can step in for the king if required). Mad! So no longer royal but yet still partly royal...

That is better pay-off than the recent VS scheme we had available. But we had longer to decide. Strangely enough, not many academics took it. Most felt that, in v worst case scenario, another year before redundancy would be much better financially!

My mum used to work in adult basic education in the area & I remember as a kid going round Horden, Easington etc trying to get people to engage. Literacy & numeracy skills were poor in some ex-miners. Too little encouragement to younger people. Sun'land, Newc'tle & Boro often considered far away too

I fear this too...

17.02.2026 17:52 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 2    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Utterly horrific that a historian could have so little understanding or put so little value into knowledge and heritage.
Sadly (v frustratingly) this is legal. But immoral to most of us working in the field.

15.02.2026 09:43 β€” πŸ‘ 9    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Apparently not. @uniofeastanglia.bsky.social seem to approve of the destruction of knowledge and learning:
bsky.app/profile/duro...
Totally insane. It shows they clearly don't care about East Anglian heritage or community.

15.02.2026 09:37 β€” πŸ‘ 5    πŸ” 2    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

That is awful. @uniofeastanglia.bsky.social should be ashamed by the destruction of knowledge and heritage. Destroying the potential for knowledge and learning should be the antithesis of what a university is about!

15.02.2026 09:35 β€” πŸ‘ 27    πŸ” 2    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Yes agreed it is legal, but as an Antiq it might raise additional issues cf Musk and Royal Society. At least it does to me as a Fellow.
@antiquaries.bsky.social
And if Antiqs sell artefacts, it's going to be hard to get the law where we want it to be.

15.02.2026 09:11 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

I wondered about that too. Will ask colleagues when back in the department next week.
It certainly should be raised and shamed in SALoN. Who edits that right now? Mind has gone blank.
@pittsmike.bsky.social could help us maybe?

15.02.2026 09:08 β€” πŸ‘ 4    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I would hope that he could be shamed by colleagues into donation of the entirety to a museum

15.02.2026 08:54 β€” πŸ‘ 7    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

I am truly gobsmacked that he is a Fellow of @antiquaries.bsky.social too! Terrible. I hope that historians have the same reaction as archaeologists do to this. Especially #medievalsky

15.02.2026 08:52 β€” πŸ‘ 21    πŸ” 2    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

This is what happens when 'treasure' can't be bought by a museum - the hoard has been broken up into individual auction lots & will disappear into many different hands, some overseas.

When do we start saying enough is enough??

Professor finds Iron Age coin hoard near Bury St Edmunds Tom Licence says he feels a personal connection to the coins, which are to be auctioned.

*Academic sells history off to the highest bidder*

There, BBC, we sorted that headline for you

If he truly feels *a connection* to the find, as the article claims, would he not have donated it to a museum?
