#svp2025 DAY 3!

An amazing talk to begin the day by @formorphology.bsky.social on community gaming servers and how they help to facilitate palaeo learning.

It was also great to learn how NatHist, a Path of Titans/palaeo server started to sort out water access in game! & for palaeo outreach ofc!

Day two of #svp2025 !!

I am thrilled to have began the day with a talk by Luke Muscutt on the locomotion of plesiosaurs.

It was especially interesting seeing the phase differences between flippers and how it affects thrust with the adorable Flip the robot, demonstrating!

Witnessed a great talk by Dr Aurore Canoville on preliminary research on sex determination in non avian dinosaurs through using the medullary bone!

Iโ€™m happy to say Iโ€™ve learnt tonnes from it, especially interesting the use of a synchrotron (a particle accelerator!!) within the research!

The haematite cement is what gives the sandstone and the church its red colour.

It also has the industrial property of being used in steel and iron production.

It can come in a variety of colours such as black, brown and red with reddish brown being the colour here.

Haematite also often occurs as a cement in sedimentary rocks such as red desert sandstone, which for those of you in Newport ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ, birth place of ROTD, is what the church is made of.

Haematite has lots of different crystal habits (essentially ways the crystals can grow) and this example we have here is also called kidney ore. Cause if you really squint it kinda looks like a kidney. And unfortunately I do not know what makes it form like that.

ROCK OF THE DAY /๐Ÿงต
Haematite

One rock commonly used as iron ore, Haematite. Fe2O3 aka classic iron oxide.

This used to be part 2 of an iron ore series but I canโ€™t find the other part, so oh well.
