Mitigation efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and meet the Paris Agreement have been offset by economic growth - Communications Earth & Environment Global carbon dioxide intensity declined from 2015 to 2024 following the Paris Agreement, but total emissions still increased due to economic growth, according to a global analysis of population, gros...

Good news: carbon intensity has declined

Bad news: carbon emissions increased, due to the rapid rise in world GDP

Also bad news: the chance of staying below 2Β°C remained low, at 17%

Better news: chance of going above 3Β°C has gone down substantially, from 26% to 9%

Another take. Agree on the merits but to improve a system that is perpetually vulnerable to powerful interests, sometimes you have to elevate sub-optimal concepts to catalyze the public. In other words sacrifice efficiency to maximize political support. Exactly the issue California HSR suffers from.

🌧️ #NewReport: the July 2025 Texas floods were up to 2β€―mm/day wetter (+7%) than similar past events β€” mainly due to human-driven climate change. Natural variability alone can't explain this. πŸ“Ž Read the report πŸ‘‰ www.climameter.org/20250704-texas-floods

Extreme weather events like Texas rain are more likely to occur due to climate change, scientists warn Climate change is likely to make extreme weather events like those experienced in Texas occur more intensely and more frequently, scientists are warning.

This is a pretty good article, with comments from @weatherwest.bsky.social and me.

Has anyone noticed that the One Big Beautiful Bill Act kills the 50-year old motor vehicle fuel efficiency program (CAFE standards) by setting the fines for non-compliance to $0? CAFE remains law, but enforcement is nullified, making it harder to meet climate and energy objectives.

Wreckage of OBBB (Holland & Knight).

Financing for transmission development, tribal + state-led projects, manufacturing projects all see funding rescinded. Previous LPO facilities like SEFI & innovative tech replaced by an EIR-style authority for brownfield development. GGRF & CPRG rescinded.

Improving land-use emission estimates under the Paris Agreement - Nature Sustainability Climate science and national emissions reporting communities have historically used different definitions and methods for anthropogenic land-based carbon removals. As the mitigation agenda accelerates...

πŸ“£ New Comment on Improving land-use emission estimates under the Paris Agreement in Nature Sustainability www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Land carbon removals are key on the path to net-zero.
Yet, confusion exists on what β€œanthropogenic” land-use C fluxes are.

More than half the COβ‚‚ emissions of the Industrial Age have been pumped into the atmosphere since 1990.

Even in the federal government, there’s a presumed trust responsibility to the American people. We’re not prescribed to be nihilists (although some may prefer federal scientists were to further a particular policy agenda).

Part of what I love about this advice is it gives people practical experience and exposure to the systems as they operate now. So you learn not only how to work within them, but also what to do when they fail. (And of course those power structures that have to be changed or dismantled)

Opinion: Ban cars from streets near schools. Children shouldn't have to risk their lives every morni... Blocking off streets near schools is simply necessary. The inconveniences pale compared with the value of students' lives.

"Car crashes are a leading cause of death of children in L.A., at a rate of 16 deaths per 100,000 kids as of 2019. As adults opt to purchase larger and larger vehicles, this has come at a huge cost to both our kids’ safety and their freedom. Walking to school should not be deadly."
