If you want your building details to look crisp and clean, even after 150 years of neglect, consider cast iron.

The central suspended span being lifted by cranes into place at Kylesku Bridge in Sutherland Scotland on 8 August 1984. It is a reinforced concrete cantilever bridge built on a curve, and on 45 degree angled supports
Kylesku bridge was connected on this day in 1984. Still beautiful, but the midges are fiercesome there. By Ove Arup, I think. Photo from scottish roads archive:

Photograph dated "June 1898", looking across a shipyard basin containing five partly fitted-out ships.
It's been ages since I did a Glasgow photo thread.
It's June 1898 and we're sitting on a roof looking across the Fairfield fitting-out basin, in this photo from an anonymous album held by the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
Let's see what we can see.

Are you looking for the forge? I had the impression it reused stone from the communal building put up by Owenites in 1825-7, commemorated by the street "Community Place". I hope the horseshoe weir survives.

Emma Sandys is in my garden, looking at the flowers
Not literally, unfortunately.
1. πΌοΈ Emma Sandys is overlooked but her work is fascinating; I love her attention to detail and symbolism in her paintings of historical, literary and mythological women. Elaine is a great example; there were two Elaines in Arthurian myth, I think this is Elaine of Corbenic.

The 1970s pyramid was known as "Hyde's Folly" after its creator Eammon Hyde, planner at Lothian Regional Council, so Colin McLean told me (both being successive Directors at Scottish Mining Museum). Yet it has proved its worth as a viewpoint.

The initial 3 engines in service are imported from England however: La Flèche, Le Stephenson and l'Elephant. The first domestic loco, Le Belge, leaves the Cockerill works at Seraing in December 1835. Despite the speed, "one experiences no difficulty in breathing," the French visitor reports.
