Had an idea for a game last night so made a quick editor as a proof of concept. It's a "3d" editor that involves you drawing pixel layers that then get stacked giving a faux 3d effect when the layers are transformed and drawn on top of each other.

I really don't understand how a product like this could even be on the market. Meta glasses should be illegal because it violates peoples privacy. You really trust people to use their judgement when history has shown that people use technology for heinous crimes???

If you decide to watch it still, I hope this post helps set expectations and dulls the pain of its orientalist depictions.

7) The French-speaking, white child declares twice throughout the film that she is in fact Japanese.

8) Throughout the story, again and again, the white parents neglect and forget about their third child, the main character, but they are never reprimanded for their parental neglect. They are portrayed as good, kind people (adorable really!) who just happen to increasingly rely on the help of their Japanese servant.

9) Do you enjoy watching white parents fumble while a humble, hardworking racialized servant picks up after them? Because there's a lot of it in this movie.

10) One of the most dramatic scenes involves the main character (a toddler) accidentally stepping into and disturbing the landlord’s mystical zen garden. It is portrayed as the ultimate offense from an outsider, as if Japanese babies are born knowing not to step into zen gardens.

3) The film centers around a white Belgian expatriate family living in post-WW2 Japan. It's based on an autobiography. None of the producers, directors or writers are Japanese. (It is a French production.)

4) The film is premised on a supposedly Japanese cultural belief that is explained in the original book's book jacket: "The Japanese believe that until the age of three, children, whether Japanese or not, are gods, each one an okosama, or "lord child." On their third birthday they fall from grace and join the rest of the human race." As far as I can tell, this is a misinterpretation of Japanese culture. "Okosama" (お子様) is a polite/honorific term to refer to someone else's child and not a term for a god. Also: it's age 7 not 3. As the saying goes, 七つまでは神のうち, which transliterates to "7 years old is the categories of the god" (Green&Lucky Net)

5) There are only two Japanese characters, and they are both portrayed through a heavy white gaze: a humble servant, and a menacing “dragon lady” landlord. Neither character is allowed much range of emotion. The servant is always docile and kind, the landlord is always distant and menacing.

6) It’s not explained why both the wealthier landlord and the servant speak fluent French.
