This is a fascinating piece in modernist periodical studies, and for me a timely one. Lately Iโ€™ve been reading the early Gasoline Alley comic strips, and one storyline centers on all the characters becoming obsessed with the new crossword puzzle fad.

Greatly honoured to have my article published in latest issue of Modernism/modernity on Wallace Thurman. A sneak peak is up now on Print+.

The essay discusses how WT grappled with the untidy politics of textual labor in the Harlem Renaissance by writing fiction ft. typewriters (machines, women).

Notes from the Field of Arabic Literature in the Time of Genocide | Modernism / Modernity Print+ It is the twentieth month of genocide, our planetโ€™s second rotation around the sun, drenched in Palestinian blood, 600 days of Palestinian slaughter, and nothing is new except the finality of the massacre. The world has sacrificed the Palestinians with its complicity and silence, and it will soon start rehabilitating itself by erecting monuments of guilt, reciting land

"Palestinian literature is not literature for times of crisis, and its study is not an afterthought or a 'safe' way to show solidarity."

Reports from a Global Field | Modernism / Modernity Print+ Understanding that modernity is always already global and colonial informs how Field Reports approaches modernism. Modernist studies is inevitably a comparative project because modernity has a shared material ground of an ever-expanding colonial-capitalism that traverses and connects the globe but that nevertheless manifests differently in singular locations.

"Where does understanding modernisms as local responses to a global colonial-capitalist modernity get us? What are the affordances of this redefinition?"
