Really not going to get into it, but in 2025 it should be obvious that giving creepy-ass companies more data on you, even data you consider *innocuous*, is a very bad idea. The aggregation of said data, the assumptions made about you, and how that will be used to your detriment are well documented

I don't think there's any task I dread more than email, and probably one that something like an LLM is most well-suited for, in terms of just producing the text.

But if you ever send me an LLM-generated email, I will crash out. I hope you'd respect me more than that.

We found out he had this cancer on Monday and that he had weeks to live. It was actually hours. He passed away Tuesday in my arms.

He had hemangiosarcoma, the most aggressive cancer in dogs. It develops silently until it forms a mass that bursts. He had been feeling not great for about a month and we were in and out of the vet and the ER. Everyone told us it was arthritis pain, which we were treating.

If you know me, you know that my dog Oscar is my everything. I've had him since I was 22. He turned 11 this weekend and then suddenly passed away on Tuesday. I am devastated.

Being at a point in my career where I can mentor others by validating their experiences and share strategies that helped me when I was struggling is such a gift. I love lifting up other people

I use the netlify free tier. It was super easy to set up and integrate with github. Now when I want to publish changes I just push to the branch that I selected for netlify and it pushes it to production. I ended up doing my domain name with them too once my previous one expired

Happy to know "vibe coding" isn't a super common term outside of whatever social media space I'm in. Sad to know that I'm the person who explained the concept to my friends this weekend

Our team is remote, however, I don't have a list of which states NCH supports remote work from. But we can figure that out once you apply if you aren't located in Ohio :)

Our team includes scientists with backgrounds in physics, biology, botany, ecology, computational systems biology, environmental science, statistics, etc. so don't feel like you need a super specific background in cancer research to apply.

I always wanted kids but with everything happening in the world (climate change, extreme right wing politics, overpopulation fears I've been hearing my entire life, the isolation of new moms, maternal mortality rates increasing, school shootings, RFK jr getting rid of vaccines, etc) I probably won't

The top half of the image illustrates equality; it is the same bike given to many people but the bike only fits one person. The bottom half of the image shows equity; a different bike for each person that fits their needs

Fantastic talk by @drraymd.bsky.social today about health equity. I especially appreciated this image about equality vs equity and why the image we usually see (the kids outside of a baseball game) doesn't quite resonate with everyone. If you have the chance to see him speak, don't miss it!

They were recs from GoodReads for AAPI month. Both were fun reads!

These are 2 of my faves from last year:
- The Midnight Feast
- None of This Is True

A full-page editorial from the June 5, 2025 issue of Science magazine titled β€œAmerica is ceding the lead in creating the future” by H. Holden Thorp, Editor-in-Chief. The article criticizes U.S. federal government policiesβ€”especially under the Trump administrationβ€”for defunding basic science, warning that this will allow other countries, notably China, to take the lead in innovation and technological development.

A prominent pull quote in bold at the center reads:
β€œThe United States will no longer have the same window into the technologies of the future that will allow it to shape and anticipate commercial and societal advances.”

The editorial emphasizes how basic research underpins advances in fields like AI, and notes a steep decline in U.S.-funded publications in major journals such as Science and Science Advances. It contrasts this with rising research output from China, particularly in AI, referencing the success of companies like DeepSeek. Thorp argues that commercial innovation is rooted in basic research, much of which has historically been publicly funded. He warns that without investment, the U.S. risks losing global leadership in science and technology.

The editorial concludes with a quote from Sudip Parikh, CEO of AAAS, asking whether future language requirements in science might be German or Chinese instead of English, underscoring the global consequences of American withdrawal from leadership in science.

The end of the American era in science has begun. Only we can stop the slide, but only if we act up.
