Participating in the Server Slam prompted me to play the original Marathon last night since it was already in my Steam library. Little me would have really liked it but it's definitely a game of its time.

I'll have to think on getting it or not, it is definitely at its best with a crew of friends or solo. It has grabbed my interest and, to me, feels easy to jump into even post-launch.

Aesthetic though is mesmerizing

Great game if it's your first extraction shooter. It's crushing with high highs and low lows. Sessions don't last long (about 10-20 mins per run). You gain everything or lose everything. Sometimes you can talk your way out of a fight... but it's rare.

The best way to play is to not get attached.

There's a part of me that wishes the new Marathon game wasn't another extraction shooter on the market.

Where it holds strong is its aesthetic, sound design, and game feel. It's incredible seeing the core shooting design still present in Bungie's games no matter the genre they go with.

okay so I don't think I'll buy marathon, I just don't have enough of the right sort of multiplayer sickos in my friendgroups to have enough people to play with. I grouped a bunch with @paradoxigent.bsky.social and it was fun though. Maybe in the future if it proves it isn't DoA.
