I don’t know (not being a linguist and not having done this study) if NYC kids still say it now. A lot of the accent settled down.

If I were a linguist, I’d do a study on the New York City “Ma” as the shortened “mother” or “mama.” I watched an Irish movie and noticed that “Ma” was “Mom.” But “Dad” in Ireland is “Da,” AFAIK. And I didn’t know anyone who used that in my peer group. I think it’s Italian-American, too.
