Early on, I am pleasantly surprised at Canada’s pace and intensity.
More than they’ve showed at any point in this tournament.
If it wasn’t for the Poulin, Fillier, Watts line… it could be really ugly.

It’s not just this game. The whole tournament has been one and done shots off the rush, no sustained pressure, disconnected passing. They skate the puck up the wing and hope a play develops upon entry…. If they stay onside.
The US Women’s program has evolved to a more dynamic team game.
The coaching for this team has been atrocious.
Way too committed to veteran role players while Gardener and Gosling sit on the bench.
Unless Fillier, Watts, and Poulin somehow score 6 or 7 goals, they won’t beat the Americans playing the way they have.
Yeah. She is a C. Nash is a good comparison, but I think she has a better complete game than Nash did.
Offensively though, yeah. That’s a good comp.
If Troy Ryan and Co. were serious about competing with the US, we would need to see more of Gardener, Gosling, Nurse, Thompson, and Jaques….

Maybe a bit hyperbolic. They probably have a chance… But the US Women’s team is far more poised and connected as a group.
Canada’s passing has been terrible. Outside of the Fillier, Watts, Poulin line there’s been no cycle, no creativity, and no sustained pressure.
Jagr is another player I would compare MPP too. That’s maybe a better comparison than Forsberg.

Yeah. Sid is a little different. I’m not sure how to describe it, but Sid is a lot more efficient with the way he plays.
More often than not, Sid plays off the puck. You don’t see him carry it from end to end almost ever. He uses his teammates probably better than anyone ever has.
And everything Forsberg did was max effort (probably a reason why he had so many injury issues). MPP is also that way.

The thing about Lindros vs Forsberg is really the shear size of Lindros. He was just physically massive. Forsberg was just hard to get off the puck due to the way he skated. He kept himself really low to the ice, and of course had incredible hands.
Poulin is much the same.
If Canada’s mens team came out and looked like this in the Olympics there would be huge public outrage leading to widespread changes.

This Canada Women’s hockey team doesn’t have a hope against the Americans. Could be time for some changes to the coaching staff and front office.
Considering some of the players left off the team, the way they play, and the usage of the players they did bring… It’s not close to good enough.
If I had to compare her game to anyone, it would probably be prime Peter Forsberg. The way she skates, how strong on the puck she is. She’s got a bit of a mean streak like he had. I’m not sure there’s anyone in today’s men’s game who brings all those elements the way she does.

This is a coaching problem. There’s no reason why Nurse, Fillier, Watts shouldn’t be the most used line in Poulin’s absence.
They’ve been by far the best line in all 3 games. The only line that has shown any ability to pass the puck in this game.
This strategy of skating the puck through the neutral zone up the wing, and trying to force it to the middle once they cross the blue line hasn’t worked for Canada’s women in any of the three games.
There are skilled players on the team… use them.
They’re not substantially older than the US team… They are not moving the puck well at all, creating the illusion of poor team speed. But player to player skating is not the issue.
They’re completely disconnected as a team. Their passing has been off in all 3 games so far.
That goal being allowed to stand after the challenge is completely insane.

He should either go up on opening day… or the first time the Royals come to town.
Anything after that is a disgrace.
Probably best to sit this one out…

It’s not Russia’s athletes fault their dictator can’t keep his hands off Ukraine either… but they’re banned all the same.
If you wear the flag, you represent the country… Maybe if enough athletes get booed some of the men might join the women in speaking out against the administration.
