He never gets jealous.

My characters are quite medieval (surprise!). Min Yang, in particular, treats women awfully. He seduces them while fully aware that the “cost” of intimacy is higher for women. Also he is far more drawn to men. 👇

A real Marty Stu twists the world to his will. Min Yang? The world twists him — the Forbidden City, the chaotic Empire — they all shape and scar him.

So, Min Yang probably isn't Marty Stu.

Or maybe he is, because of me, who dreams of being a brilliant coward.

Min Yang is not a hero. He’s a coward, an avoider, a master of evasion until the walls close in. His weakness isn’t hidden; it’s the engine of his story.

2. His Victories Taste Like Ash
He doesn’t win. He survives — and often at a monstrous cost.

Slowly, Min Yang crawled out of my imagination — beautiful, magnetic, terrifying. And then came the worst fear every writer secretly dreads:

What if he’s nothing but a Marty Stu?

I’m still afraid, he is. But here are the clues that make me hope — he isn’t:
