I'm younger than you (was still a kid in Iowa in the 80s). When I came to NY, the city was already mostly clean. Brooklyn wasn't yet full of posh boutiques for hipsters, but people weren't shooting one another in the streets like in the stories people told me.

I do agree that having any kind of non-confrontational relationship with a Republican official is bad, but this is (even more so) true of the wife too, nothing to do with cheating.
