You could even make the progression basically fully randomized by altering weathers and track layouts (reverse versions of the same track is an easy way), or changing the order that you have to complete them in. So many options honestly

You could add "checkpoints" in between by allowing them to buy another car with money earned between races so that if they crash and buy off their hospital bills, they can continue with that car. That could be an interesting exploration too, maybe

TL;DR: I think a roguelike racing game could be a sick idea;
- Make the player start with 3 wildly different but similarly "strong" options as a starter car
- Choose between 3 different upgrades between races
- Simply don't headbutt traffic with too large a speed discrepancy or try again bucko

It adds such a unique layer to gamplay that it feels like a missed opportunity not to. I totally get it, but this is what I learned for myself from playing that game

Cause thats the vibe I get from Night-Runners, and I love it, but I hate that the only stake is that I just lose the race. The sense of speed in that game is so high that it almost feels like a letdown that I don't die from the ridiculous speed difference between me and the traffic

Between races you get upgrades you can choose to spice up gameplay; engine swap your supermini with a V8 from a landyacht, goofy shit like that. I think I could genuinely play a game like that for so so long because it has this visceral thrill of surviving races, not just winning them

Give the player 3 widely different bodystyle choices with similar performance per run. Like idk, a supermini, an older sportscar and a souped up wagon or something. Maybe next run you get a high horsepower land yacht, an SUV and a performance pick-up truck as your options. etc. etc.

Make a couple short-and-sweet campaigns that serve as checkpoints for progression, maybe add some modes that you have to complete them all as the true roguelike experience.. I think that could be an interesting game, especially if you always get a random selection of cars to start with

You could do something where if you do end up "dying" in a run, you can keep some random car parts to give players a head start to make some progress between run attempts. Like "oh yeah your turbo survived the collision, you can take it with you from the racing gods" or something like that

You crash, oh well, you lose the race, just start over.

Not if a crash at high enough speed difference ends your character entirely

A roguelike racing game could work completely on the principle of "if collision exceeds [x] amount of difference in speed = death".

I think that could be a fascinating exploration of both genres as it puts up stakes normally not present in racing games

Just gonna put this out here so that if I someday have the time and money to do this, I'd love to make a roguelike racing game of some kind.

Night-Runners is a sick game but with how high the stakes feel, it's almost weird that collision at high speed isn't the end of a race.
