So so bad. Edmonton School Board’s list seems to have been a tactic to dramatize how ridiculous the legislation is? Gotta think ESB is pretty progressive.

I'm joining Quakers Fast for Gaza. Not that my refraining from eating, in the midst of plenty, will feed a single starving person. But perhaps it will put pressure on the US and international community to stop facilitating genocide. Join me?

We're serving a Vichy-like regime at Texas public universities now, and increasingly, this is true across the country.

Keeping the Texas DREAM
The CrisisOn June 4, 2025, the Department of Justice (DOJ) sued the State of Texas to block the Texas Dream Act, a 24-year-old in-state college tuition law. Just hours after the DOJ filed the lawsuit ...
Undocumented students in Texas are facing a new law stripping them of their in-state tuition rate, even though they are Texas residents. (At UT Austin, the difference is from $11K to $$48K.) Student status also unlocks jobs and rent money. Please help if you can.

Right-Wing Crackdowns Drive Academics Away From UT and the U.S.
Staff morale, federal funds, and state confidence dry up
It's very Vichy over here. I don't know how to do a good job of this job I love anymore, except by trying to mitigate the worst harms--which in itself is something of a moral injury.

I had a chance to read your essay in draft, Robbie, and thought it was great. It led me to read your book, which I then discussed in a forthcoming essay in ALH on important trends in 18th century studies. I love it when our projects bring us into new conversations.

4.6 Billion Years On, the Sun Is Having a Moment
In the past two years, without much notice, solar power has begun to truly transform the world’s energy system.
Believe it or not...an encouraging article from Bill McKibben. Apparently solar and wind power are increasing geometrically and are now cheaper than fossil fuels, and on track to be more widely used, very quickly. This cheered me up. YMMV.
