if the US government logs these trees at the rate / quantity they're proposing, we'll lose one of the last old-growth forests. there's no coming back from that. if you have five minutes to leave a comment pushing back against the BLM, please do; there's a guide to that below.

So, just to recap, we have two random DOGE bros with basically no knowledge or experience in the humanities (and at least one of whom is a college dropout), who just went around terminating grants that had gone through a full grant application process by feeding in a list of culture war grievance terms, selecting out the grant titles based on the appearance of seemingly β€œwoke” words, then asking ChatGPT β€œyo, tell me this is DEI” and then sending termination emails the next day from a private server and forging the director’s signature.

This is what β€œgovernment efficiency” looks like in practice: two guys with zero relevant experience, a keyword list built on culture war grievances, and a chatbot confidently spitting out 120-character verdicts on federal grants that went through actual review processes. The experts who might have explained what these grants actually do? Locked out. The director whose signature appeared on termination letters? Couldn’t tell you which grants got cut or w

Ever wondered how your grant got cancelled? No we know. Some college dropout asked ChatGPT "is it DEI/woke"?

Two panel comic. Panel 1: a museum display of a megalodon jaw fossil, with some museum goers standing around it. There is a graphic on the information tablet next to the fossil, depicting the approximation of the megalodon’s full size compared to a human. Panel 2: β€œ3.6 million years ago:” we see the true megalodon as it existed, a small shark with ludicrously large, juicy lips.

Pleading with people to understand the scope of this.

It won’t just be for immigrants.

They will use these camps to detain anyone they deem as an β€œother”.

The disabled. The homeless. Trans people. Political dissidents.

Your tax dollars will be spent incarcerating people without due process.

You're right, it's LESS than nothing, it's actively working against Democracy and gleefully throwing every vulnerable group under the bus, all while giving yourself a shiny gold-star sticker.

I'm a thermal engineer and ... this is not possible. It's actually hilarious how impossible this is. Even with radiators with e=0.98, you would realistically need 3-5x that ideal area and massive heat pipes (which quickly lose efficiency as a function of length) to dissipate that much heat.

Tremblay's "The Beast You Are" is a fabulous novella with this type of falsified verse and reads much better once your eyes learn to ignore the pointless line breaks.

"little operating or maintenance cost" is a WILDLY INSANE thing to assert regarding anything space-based, and it's not even the third wildest claim in that pile on nonsense

New from me: It is not just that the US is experiencing democratic backsliding. Authoritarianism has emerged more quickly than in other benchmark countries.

This graph from John Burn-Murdoch sums it up. 🧡
