Multivariate Models of Animal Sex: Breaking Binaries Leads to a Better Understanding of Ecology and ... Synopsis. β€œSex” is often used to describe a suite of phenotypic and genotypic traits of an organism related to reproduction. However, these traitsβ€”gamete type,

Our paper on how animal sex is way more complicated than a binary (and how acknowledging that makes us better biologists) is now out in its fully formatted form, and it's open access! πŸ§ͺ

I remain skeptical that the top level reasoning is anything more than controlled opposition as an β€œalternative” to defend the App Store monopoly but excited for progress all the same.

1/ Oh hey it's Pride Month. I honor of this glittery new place, I'm porting over possibly the most meaningful thing (to myself) I've ever written about being gay. Meaningful not just for the particular story, but also for the meta point that I never thought I'd write something like this publicly.

I'll be real honest and say I have even more contempt than before for "wow the fellas sure are saying some bad shit on twitter" non-analysis.

If you can't connect ideas, meaningfully describe ideology, offer opposing viewpoints, or even offer means of support, what are you really doing?

Hey Frontend Bluesky what’s the best way to build mobile web apps these days? Trying to stay as close to the web platform as possible with a similar UX

Hey just wanted to say thank you for writing this. I won’t speculate on the sincerity of other commenters but this line of thought you presented helped something click for me

Mushroom Popcorn Mushroom popcorn is unique because it pops into a circular or mushroom shape and is larger and crunchier than our other varieties. Perfect for caramel corn.

@wesbos.com here’s your circular popcorn in smaller quantities if you’re still looking for that?

No dms so not sure what the proper etiquette is for stuff like this πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Is there any "branding" yet around what LLMs have done to web application development?

I'm less interested in the "AI changes everything!" rhetoric, and more in the "cacheing has moved from x to y; delegated auth is harder because z; scaling and load balancing needs new patterns a, b and c".

My bro you are talking about trying to modify human behavior to maintain the quality of the underlying data on a social network.

Human behavior whatever it is, is the data, we structure the systems to serve us not the other way around.

Probably counter to the core design of Twitter and Bluesky but anytime a response of negative sentiment can amplify or reach beyond the thing being responded to seems like a system that will inherently derive engagement off conflict.

Think there might be a good comparison to nutrition and nutrition labels. Obviously lots of factors go into what people buy beyond the wishful rational consumer.

Meanwhile social media companies across the board structurally refuse to answer the question of how often they promote certain content

Not enough separation between speech and reach. Community reacting to the arrival of bad faith actors. Densely connected subgraphs clashing because they don’t have shared understanding or values. A small team just trying to hold it all together.

I don’t work directly with gRPC enough to have a strong opinion but I will say I have worked with lots of brilliant engineers who have made unmaintainable messes out of the message structure because the right abstractions and best practices weren’t obvious or encouraged enough by the design

When you are 15 minutes into your book and you are already regretting you didn’t read it sooner. Curious what books made others feel this way, software or otherwise

IPFS is now on Bluesky! We’re excited to share that IPFS now has an official presence on Bluesky, a new decentralized social network that recently spun out of Twitter.

We’re excited to share thatΒ IPFS now has an official presence here on @bsky.app! Up until now, IPFS was only on Twitter. As social media continues to change though, we believe being in more than 1 place will be beneficial to the IPFS community & brand. Read more about it on our blog:

What does your setup/flow look like?

Composable Moderation A customizable, composable approach to moderation that prioritizes safety and gives users and developers more control.

Just like our approach to algorithmic choice, our approach to moderation allows for an ecosystem of third-party providers. Moderation should be a composable, customizable piece that can be layered into your experience.

My point was more along the lines of so much of society and tech already has an inherently male bias.

I mean just look at the origin of Facebook.

Maybe we should try an online space for everyone that starts with a feminine bias?

πŸ’― I am for whatever community emerges from a space that starts with a risk of a bias towards femininity. Certainly men have implicitly coded their masculinity into … You know… *vague everywhere gestures*
