How good we had it Planes were falling from the sky and the sky itself was falling but didn’t the driveway still need shoveling? Salt for the icy steps. The kitchen sink full again too. I’m told that we can’t post our way out of fascism but they quite literally posted us right into it. Just another one of the many unfair things about fascism. I watched a Family Feud the other night where Steve told one of the teams that they didn’t give him the answers on his card beforehand but he damn well knew what the answers were not. One of two scenarios have presented themselves which is that everything gets so bad so quickly that a sufficient response becomes inevitable or else they only get just so bad overtime that we can keep putting our duty off until it is no longer ours. I pick up my phone every five minutes expecting it to tell me something good about the world and I thought of a night some friends and I crawled around on all fours looking for crumbs of cocaine that had been accidentally blown off the table into the carpet. I've been asking myself just how it is that a person can go about their day to day life at a time like this and I keep coming back to another question which is how did we ever convince ourselves we had the right to do so before?

This is a Hall of Fame reader comment on a very reactionary op-ed about Zohran Mamdani's victory that was published in my local paper today.

Okay maybe this is too hot a take for 5:30pm on a Saturday but I think meme accounts that don’t give any attribution paved the way for people to accept AI words and imagery because it separated culture and entertainment from the idea that someone had to have those thoughts and compose them.

Very cool, and also very safe, that everyone people trying to live their lives now have to account for the possibility of these absolute dorks doing Sicario Fantasy Camp maneuvers at random.

I expect that consumer-facing AI programs will continue to improve and they may become much more useful tools for everyday life in the future.

But I think it was a disastrous mistake that today’s models were taught to be convincing before they were taught to be right.

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

People developing relationships with LLMs is a good example of why we never did a thing with NITW promo where Mae had a twitter account or talked to you or something.

i just find this so bizarre. searching through texts and doing the reading for myself is how i actually think through ideas! trying to put together a sentence is how i figure out what i actually want to say!
