February 23, 1916: Michael J. Dudick, Byzantine Bishop of Passaic, is born in St. Clair, PA († 2007). He created the Heritage Institute Museum & Library in Passaic (later NJ) with a wide range of Carpatho-Rusyn cultural artifacts. Dudick also supported Carpatho-Rusyn publications in America.

February 23, 1877: Polish legal historian Przemysław Dąbkowski is born in Lviv 🇺🇦 († 1950). His research on Galicia, in particular the Sanok region in the 15th-16th centuries, contains extensive data on social, ethnic & legal relations between Lemko Rusyn peasants & Polish landlords.

February 23, 1750: Ioann Kutka, priest & pedagogue, is born in Sukov 🇸🇰 († 1812). He has published an elementary language primer in Church Slavonic & vernacular Rusyn, as well as two catechisms in Church Slavonic - the popular 1801 catechism went through 11 editions up to 1931.

February 22, 1928: Linguist Pavlo Čučka is born in Baranynci 🇺🇦 († 2016). He specialised in anthroponymy & authored several studies on personal names in Subcarpathia. Čučka's other publications criticise the post-1989 Carpatho-Rusyn revival movement in Ukraine.

February 22, 1814: Oskar Kolberg, folklorist, ethnographer & musicologist, is born in Przysucha 🇵🇱 († 1890). He carried out ethnographic expeditions in the eastern Lemko Region & Subcarpathian Rus’. The materials, published posthumously, include descriptions of Carpatho-Rusyn material culture.

February 14, 1966: Zvonimir Njaradi, belletrist & literary critic, is born in Ruski Kerestur 🇷🇸 († 1993). His lyric poetry is imbued with intellectual qualities & profound reflections about the world and the self. Njaradi has been a repeated winner of the Struni Šerca poetry festival.

February 14, 1919: Gregory Zhatkovych & Julius Gardoš arrive at the Paris Peace Conference, representing the American National Council of Uhro-Rusyns. ANCUR’s decision for unification of Subcarpathian Rus’ with Czechoslovakia was included in the Treaty of St Germain & settled the territory's status.

February 14, 1894: Simeon Pysh, activist & publicist, is born in Wapienne 🇵🇱 († 1957). Active in many Lemko initiatives, Pysh moved to the U.S. in 1922, where he co-founded the Carpatho-Russian American Center and the Lemko Relief Committee. Pysh also wrote many articles on Lemko life.

February 14, 1892: The Greek Catholic Union of Rusyn Brotherhoods in the USA, the oldest functioning Carpatho-Rusyn American fraternal organization, is founded in Wilkes-Barre, PA. It provided economic & cultural support to its members & communities and was active in homeland politics prior to 1945.

February 14, 1732: Ioann Bradač, Bishop of Mukačevo, is born in Torysky 🇸🇰 († 1772). He contributed to the Eparchy of Mukačevo ending its subordination to the R. C. bishop of Eger & headed the independent eparchy as its bishop. Bradač is also known for preparing an elementary primer & a prayer book.

February 13, 1948: Helena Medješi, linguist & editor, is born in Ruski Kerestur 🇷🇸. She co-edited the Serbian-Rusyn (1995, 1997) & Rusyn-Serbian (2010) dictionaries & co-authored the revised spelling for Vojvodina Rusyn (2021). Medješi has also served as editor-in-chief for the paper Ruske Slovo.

February 12, 1939: Parliamentary elections are held in Carpatho-Ukraine. In effect, the pro-government Ukrainian National Union (92.5%) ran unopposed, as the opposition was refused registration. The violations were never challenged as Carpatho-Ukraine declared independence on March 15.

February 12, 1937: The Carpatho-Russian Congress is convened in New York City by Alexei Gerovskiy. Its ultimatum to the Czechoslovak government demanded autonomy for Subcarpathian Rus’ within 60 days. This seems to have contributed to approving the first phase of the autonomy in June 1937.

February 12, 1866: Ivan Polivka, cultural activist, is born in Breznička 🇸🇰 († 1930). He chaired the Svidník National Council (1918) & later served as a district school inspector in Subcarpathian Rus’. Polivka was also active in local Russophile organizations & collected Carpatho-Rusyn folk songs.

February 12, 1835: Anatolij Kralyckyj, belletrist & publicist, is born in Čabiny 🇸🇰 († 1894). A prolific writer, his works include historical, geographic & ethnographic studies of Carpatho-Rusyns, short stories about Carpatho-Rusyn village life, tales such as Prince Laborec & many others.

February 11, 1947: Mikola Kamenicki, folklorist & poet, is born in Kucura 🇷🇸. His poetry expresses a concern for how personal domestic situations fit the public environment. Kamenicki wrote several studies on Carpatho-Rusyn folklore, focusing on his native town of Kucura.

February 10, 1934: Vatican creates the Lemko Apostolic Administration, detaching 9 deaneries from the Greek Catholic Eparchy of Przemyśl. Its task was to halt the spread of Orthodoxy among Lemkos. The Administration ceased activity in 1947 following the Lemko deportations.

February 9, 1929: Cum Data Fuerit, a decree regulating church life among U.S. Greek (Byzantine) Catholics, is issued by Pope Pius XI. It required all prospective priests to be celibate & church property to be turned over to the bishop. It provoked major protests, including the separation of ACROD.

February 8, 1939: František Dancák, priest & publicist, is born in Varhaňovce 🇸🇰 († 2018). As a priest in Snakov, the parish previously served by Emil Kubek, Dancák was the one who popularized the writer’s legacy among modern-day Carpatho-Rusyns in Europe.

February 7, 1936: Mykhailo Tyvodar, ethnographer & historian, is born in Bedevľa 🇺🇦 († 2017). His most comprehensive work deals with Carpathian stock-raising practices. He also wrote a book on Transcarpathian ethnography & a history of Bedevľa. He consistently opposed the Carpatho-Rusyn movement.

February 6, 1964: Anna Gajová, painter & illustrator, is born in Prešov 🇸🇰. She is a representative of the Slovak fantastic realism school. Gajová's work is dominated by fantasy compositions with symbolic or allegorical content. She also illustrated several Carpatho-Rusyn publications.

February 5, 1941: Julian Sabados, businessman & activist, is born in Ruski Kerestur 🇷🇸 († 2017). He established a machinery company in Ontario, Canada, allowing him to employ Carpatho-Rusyn newcomers to the country. Sabados also founded the Rusyn Association of North America.

February 5, 1919: The Rusyn Council, a provisional government of Hungary's Carpatho-Rusyn autonomy, is formed. It had 42 representatives from Subcarpathia, with Orest Sabov as chair & Avgustyn Štefan as vice-chair. When Soviet Hungary was formed in March 1919, Štefan held his leading position.

February 4, 1945: The Maramoroš Congress of People's Committees is convened in Sighetu Marmației 🇷🇴. Initiated by envoys from Transcarpathian Ukraine, the Congress called to unite the Romanian Maramoroš County with that state. Later that year, it was recalled on Stalin's directions.

February 4, 1941: Painter Michal Čabala is born in Nižné Čabiny 🇸🇰 († 2002). He turned from figurative compositions & portraits to landscapes, village & urban scenes, mostly of Carpatho-Rusyn areas. Čabala's monumental works adorn public buildings in several towns & villages in Slovakia.

February 3, 1895: Musician Stephen Skimba is born in Wołowiec 🇵🇱 († 1966). He is best remembered for his recordings of a Lemko wedding & folk music. Skimba also played a leading role in producing the film Lemko Wedding (1929), co-founded & worked with several Russophile organizations.

February 2, 1914: Ivan Kerča, poet & editor, is born in Strabyčovo 🇺🇦 († 1951). As editor, he was responsible for several series of literary works by Carpatho-Rusyn authors (1940-43). His own poetry was critical of the Carpatho-Rusyns' low social status & hopeful for liberation brought by Russia.

February 1, 1931: Painter Volodymyr Mykyta is born in Rakošyno 🇺🇦. His portraits, genre scenes, landscapes & still-lifes are filled with reflections on human existence & problems faced by the modern society. Mykyta took active part in the post-1989 Carpatho-Rusyn revival movement in Ukraine.

February 1, 1919: Olena Rudlovčak, cultural historian & literary scholar, is born in Mukačevo 🇺🇦 († 2007). Her scholarship centers on Carpatho-Rusyn culture & literature in the 19th & 20th cc. Her works include literature anthologies, extensive biographies, surveys of cultural organizations etc.

January 31, 1957: Historian Peter Švorc is born in Liptovský Mikuláš 🇸🇰. He has published several studies on the incorporation of Subcarpathian Rus’ into Czechoslovakia and the region's subsequent history, with special attention to the problem of defining the Slovak-Rusyn border.
