Eerily reminiscent of a high school second XI match in Perth circa 1978 in which I had the misfortune to be on the receiving end - on a primary school oval with a cracked concrete pitch and 40 metre boundaries. Memories…

Some recent book purchases, three-quarters of which are appropriate on this #AnzacDay2025.
I visited Pozieres and Fromelles in 2016, the centenary of the actions, as well as Ypres, Mons, Bullecourt and Dixmuide.
The Menin Gate evening service was truly memorable.

About 4% of our exports used to go to the USA. But I guess they will be going to China now.

Great hospital menu

Great hospital menu

My wife is in hospital for some chemo. This is her dinner menu. It runs to eight pages.
I’m thinking I should pretend to be ill so I can eat here.

Australian battalion losses in the attack at Fromelles, evening of 19/20 July 1916, from starting strengths of around 950.
Fromelles was these unit’s first action under fire. Welcome to WW1.

I am reading Peter Barton’s The Lost Legions of Fromelles. About half the book is the Bavarian perspective. I think I have learned more about WW1 from this book than any other.

Actually, I think I misunderstood his comments. What FDT actually meant is that he WANTS monarchs to grovel to him for exemptions, so that he can hand them down like some sort of God-Emperor.

He plainly has no idea how constitutional monarchies work, in addition to everything else.

Australia does not import US beef for two reasons. First, we produce far more beef than our 27mill population can eat. Secondly, US exporters are not interested in complying with our biosecurity laws. Apparently Americans are above laws.

Australia is virtually the same. Voting is mandatory, so the results are determined by the entire population. We use a preference system, so 2nd and 3rd preferences count when results are tight.

The US is overcompensating for being late for WW1 and WW2 by being early for WW3. Land and mineral grab, pure and simple.
