But that’s not true of all art. Games get delisted and shut down all the time. The Stop Killing Games campaign has been in the headlines recently. Initially, that was because the organiser, Ross Scott posted a video discussing the likely failure of the campaign. But that video sparked new interest, which saw petitions in the UK and EU blow past the numbers required to be considered for debate in Parliament and the European Commission respectively. That campaign focuses on multiplayer games, but single-player games also suffer.

Imagine if Disney decided we could no longer purchase or stream Lilo & Stitch (2002) because the release of Lilo & Stitch (2025) made the original obsolete? Or if a publisher unilaterally decided to stop publishing the work of an author because it represented outdated views and stereotypes. Oh wait… I’ve written about this at length before, so I won’t harp on here.

While owners of John Wick Hex and Wheels of Aurelia will still be able to download and play their games, they won’t be accessible to new players. To me, that reeks of a kind of cultural vandalism. It robs future enthusiasts of experiences they may enjoy. Potentially even worse, it robs future creators of possible sources of inspiration. It breaks that unending chain of intertextuality. And it’s a clear expression of the fundamentally uneven power dynamics between players and providers.

Even in what should be a democratised era of social media and self-publishing, megacorporations have a stranglehold over cultural capital. They determine what’s likely to be watched and read and played — and none of it is in our interests. Their decisions aren’t made to push any particular medium forward; it’s to bolster their own coffers and sate their shareholders. And that way lies enshittification and the repeated bloodbaths in the gaming industry over the past few years.
