A star exploded as a supernova in a galaxy 100 million light years away that we call NGC 5957. Here is an image of it I took using the Seestar S50.🧪

There are many galaxies in the Virgo Cluster, including the bright face-on spiral M100, the brightest in this image which I took last night. M100 is 56 million light years away. The dimmer galaxies in the photo are (clockwise from upper right) IC 793, NGC 4312, NGC 4328, and NGC 4322.🧪

Asteroids are discovered because they appear to move against the distant background stars. The short streak near the center of this image is asteroid 28Bellona, taken using the Seestar S50 last night. It is aboout 75 miles across and orbits between Mars and Jupiter. This shows 55 minutes of motion.🧪

Venus is now a morning planet. Look for it a bit before sunrise low in the eastern sky. These images were taken at 6:53 AM today, 5 minutes before sunrise, showing Venus as a 10% lit waxing crescent. You should be able to see the crescent shape using binoculars. 🧪

A group of galaxies of various brightnesses and size in the Virgo cluster.

At center is the large lenticular galaxy M86, part of the Virgo cluster of galaxies. I imaged this last night using the Seestar S50 for 70 minutes. There are more than a dozen galaxies in the image. This area is sometimes called the Markarian Chain. M86 is about 50 million light years away.🧪

M101 is an example of a face-on spiral galaxy. I imaged it last night using the Seestar smart telescope.🧪

The late winter/early spring western sky on 3/22, with Jupiter as the brightest object. Canon SL1 for 17 seconds. 🧪

Happy Saturn Ring Plane Crossing Day! The rings of Saturn are only 5 to 30 meters thick, but around 280,000 kilometers wide, and every 13-15 years we see them edge-on from Earth. Here are three charts from Sky Safari showing the ring system in 2025, 2024, and 2026.🧪

Three galaxies that make up the "Leo Triplet" or "Leo Trio" are M65, M66 and NGC 3628. I used the Seestar S50 smart telescope to image these on 3/17. They were all discovered in the 1780's and all are spiral galaxies, ranging in distance from 35 to 42 million light years.🧪

Here is Venus last night, 6 minute before sunset using a 500mm lens. Venus is only 2% illuminated and only 5 days from moving between Earth and the Sun. It appears almost 1 arc minute across.🧪

Here's the Pi Day (3/14) total lunar eclipse from northern Ohio. This was taken near mid-eclipse and I found it to be quite a bright lunar eclipse. Note that since the Moon moved through the upper part of Earth's umbra, it appears much lighter near the top.🧪

Total Lunar Eclipse early Friday morning! The partial eclipse begins at 1:09 AM EDT and totality begins at 2:25 EDT (11:25 PM on Thursday PDT). Totality ends at 3:32 AM EDT, and the partial phases end at 4:48 AM EDT. Here is a photo from 2022 at the Oberlin College Observatory using an iPhone.🧪

Jupiter 15 minutes after sunset. Jupiter's moons are in the correct order from the planet outward.🧪

Another day of imaging Venus in full daylight. Today I was able to see it with my unaided eye also. It was about 20º from the Sun, so I had to put the Sun behind the garage roof for safety. I used a 500mm telephoto lens for this image.🧪

Mercury and Venus last night at 7:38 PM. The two planets will appear a bit closer together tonight. Find Mercury between 8 and 9 PM tonight, due to daylight savings time, if that affects you.🧪

Mercury, Venus, and Subaru Forester last night at 7:22 PM from northern Ohio. The Subaru is another name for the Pleiades star cluster, which is not in this frame, but above it.

How I feel about waking up to snow in March.

The chart is for 41º N latitude. Mercury should still be nicely visible in mid-north latitudes. South of the equator, the view of Mercury is not very good, due to the shallow angle of the ecliptic to the horizon.

Go outside tonight around 7PM and find a spot with a good western horizon. You'll easily see Venus. Then look below and left of Venus to see Mercury about 6º from Venus, or about 3 finger widths at arm's length. The chart is from Sky Safari.🧪

Here's Venus in full daylight this morning around 10AM. The planet is getting larger by the day as it moves closer to Earth prior to inferior conjunction with the Sun on 3/22.🧪
