@thormitchell.bsky.social was our very first guest on The Product Experience podcast, and it was great to have him back to chat about building an Associate Product Manager program during his time as a VP Product at Miro.

I’m trying to define what Product Discovery is so I can write an article about it: What is its charter, who conducts the activities under this umbrella; who is accountable for its ops and best practices; and what are the key components of Product Discovery Ops. Give me your genius thoughts…

One of my favorite product metaphors, you can dedicate every resource to the most valuable initiative you need a good mix.

Because of these, people tend to suggest things that made their day to day better
Sometimes it also helps the company

I was an internal PM and I believe I helped the org to think about value while balancing conflicting goals

20.11.2024 21:10 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

It is very common that
- Users know about their parts of process and not about how a whole process.
-Few people have authority to change internal processes.
- Users are incentivized to do things fast because speed is easier to measure than quality.
- πŸ†™ mgmt doesn’t know day to day struggles

In those cases you fall into the built trap , you add features without adding value.
Features are built for HiPPos instead of people doing the work (ex lots of reporting)

If you mix good PMs with operations people that can really change how an organization works the impact can be huge.

In that line of thought
A head of product can be successful even if 2 of 4 teams don’t reach their goals
Can they sacrifice the goals of 2 of the teams just to reach the goals of the others ? What happens to the people that belong to the teams with sacrificed goals ?

20.11.2024 19:03 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Do you think this applies to every level ? (From head to CPO)

is it dangerous to be too far from your direct reports ?

Who belongs to the team for an individual contributor?

In Jobs to Be Done by Tony Ulwick, he argues that some companies are idea-first and some companies are needs-first.

I’ve been thinking this distinction is really helpful for understanding why so much product advice and best practices get misapplied.

Let me explain:

You use one framework or at least a part of it at least every week , sometimes more.

Why ?
