Black futures cannot be reduced to images in the feed or our faces on a flyer. Our future will be built on Black brilliance, foresight, and accountability.

Living with disability has taught me that justice isn’t charity — it’s a right. Disabled people, especially women of color, belong at every decision-making table. Our communities are stronger when everyone of us is seen, heard, and valued.

At a time when our Latino brothers and sisters have faced fear and uncertainty, we must stand in solidarity, reject discrimination, and work toward a future rooted in dignity and justice for all.

Today is the start of Latino Heritage month— I’m proud to support the strong and vibrant Latino communities across the East Bay, including in the beating heart of Fruitvale!

I could go on for days talking about the incredible women who have helped shape the Bay Area and left a lasting impact not just in our state, but across the country.

They remind me daily of why we keep fighting – because when women of color lead, communities move forward.

Right at home in Oakland, we can look to our very own Barbara Lee. She has been a moral compass in Congress for decades.

She made waves as the lone vote against endless war in 2001 and is still one of the fiercest advocates for peace and justice for all.

Many of us have heard the name Dolores Huerta. Her roots stretch across California, and her legacy across the country.

She was a bastion for farmworkers’ rights and rallied thousands with the call - Sí se puede.

Oakland was the birthplace of the Black Panther Party, and Elaine Brown was an iconic member who rose to leadership within the party.

She battles for food security, housing, and dignity for Oakland’s Black families. She helped shape the idea of community care as resistance.

One of the most beautiful parts of the Bay Area is our history. We have been home to countless trailblazing women of color. Their leadership shaped our communities and I want to highlight just a few.

Clean air isn’t a luxury—it’s a right. These rollbacks are an attack on our community, public health, and our future.

West Oakland, a primarily Black and brown community, is already considered a toxic hotspot due to air pollution from our highways and industrial sites.

This directly impacts our families and children with higher rates of lung health issues and higher rates of hospitalization from lung issues.

Trump’s EPA has scaled back equity and justice programs and is moving to repeal the 2009 Endangerment Finding, which allows the EPA to regulate emissions. Without it, pollution rules can be eliminated.

This puts public health at a massive risk.
