Lots of feelings about the importance of taking up space as a minority today. the tl;dr is that those of us who are capable need to show up at events to interact with folks in person: #transwriter #writesky #supportyourlocalcon

Cover of my poetry collection Time Travel Is Easy. Cover art by Helen Whistberry. The cover depicts the skeleton of an Archaeopteryx against a background of stylized black trees.
Itβs World Book Day? Why not take a trip back in time! TIME TRAVEL IS EASY is my full-length poetry collection, examining Deep Time, queer embodiment, and the trauma of life in the late Anthropocene. Itβs available through the links on my page: mimulus.weebly.com/books.html

#HorrorWritersChat Q3:
Any parasite. Parasites freak me tf out. The very concept of tapeworms freak me out.
But bigger than thatβ¦I mean I think cranes are beautiful, but if I saw glowing red eyes at night and dark ruffle of giant wings, I, too, would think Iβd encountered cosmic horror.
For me, chimps.
They are terrifying.

Phengaris, surrounded by a symmetrical pattern of butterflies and beetles
Thanks, Eryn. LOVED this topic.
Phengaris, takes its title from a very innocuous little blue butterfly, which parasitizes ants in a fiendishly inventive way.
A great deal of the horror is about arthropods, but also the ways humans can parasitism each other. #HorrorWritersChat

Pausing now and then to glare some more. Just as it started to be irritating, it became clear. The bird was tapping Morse code. It said. GET OUT!

Chimps.
The secret movie at our theater recently was Primate. Iβm hard to scare, but I covered my eyes through a lot of it.
Other than chimps, giant bugs give me full body shivers.

It's so cliche but I love a good fucked up deer. It's not specifically for the deer factor- I love an ordinary, animal you might be able to see outside your home, but there is something Wrong. not quite right.
simple things, like: was that deers eyes too far forward?
Thank you, Eryn! I have lots to shout about. My collection of strange stories is out next month, my new album of strange music is out now, the edition of Frtitz Leiber's 'Conjure Wife' that I edited is out on the 20th.
Much more!

I shot from the alley and out into the street, planning to cross it. But the boars must've known these streets better than I ever could. They waited for me, at least a dozen, eyes red, riding Harleys. I'd swear one laughed as they gunned their engines and steered toward me.

Swarms of bees. I had a paralyzing fear of bees and of bee stings as a kid because so many relatives were allergic. I also grew up in the era of "killer bee" hype. I was--and am--terrified of being swarmed by bees and stung until I die. Yikes. Got the ick just typing that out.

Insects with unexpected and hostile capabilities. For instance, the Saddleback caterpillar (growing up we called 'em "corn worms") looks neat but is basically ten million stingers on a hundred million legs. Something one might find fascinating, encountered as trauma instead? Yes.

I'm Michael, I write queer cosmic & supernatural horror!
Plants are the things that creep in most, such as a talking fern or an extinct species supernaturally revived by malevolent forces. A plant with agency or a miracle offered for evil reasons are very compelling to me.

Here's something I learned in researching this story: Since the death of George Floyd, 2/3rds of the private companies that provided liability insurance to law enforcement agencies pulled out, and those that remained have increased their rates and lowered caps.

If you're interesting in process, I wrote a blog post about how the matriarchy works in the Points novels, and how and why Lisa and I made some of our choices.

I always flip "bury your gays." The queer (and other marginalized) characters always make it to the end. It's the bigots who get the axe along the way. I like to depict marginalized characters as having a survival advantage due to already having navigated a hostile world.
#HorrorWritersChat
Lots and lots of open discussion of religious trauma and the effects of growing up in a bigoted religious context. I depict these because I experience(d) them, but also for the pleasure of seeing bigoted characters undone by their own hate. It's a form of therapy.
