The Health and Education Justice Initiative combats the systemic issues that adversely impact child health and well-being, including education as a social determinant of health. The Health and Education Justice Initiative seeks to address these issues in Missouri through affirmative impact litigation and other impact advocacy tools including legislative, administrative, and media advocacy, informed by a community lawyering approach.Responsibilities: Use litigation and other impact advocacy tools to address policies and practices that adversely affect children marginalized by lack of resources, race, disability, or other circumstances. Strategies will be informed by community and may also include: Impact litigation, Demand letters or letters of concern, Administrative complaints, Legal research, Legislative and administrative advocacy (within Legal Services Corporation or “LSC” guidelines), Negotiations, Media advocacy, Policy analysisEngage with a wide range of community partners in cases and initiatives to help carry out systemic advocacy. Work closely with and report directly to the Managing Attorney to identify and develop systemic advocacy issues concerning child health and well-being.Work with Managing Attorney and Senior Staff Attorney to participate in litigation teams for various cases that impact child health and well-being. The litigation teams can include attorneys in other LSEM programs and units (including our Director of Advocacy and the Teitelman Chair attorney) as well as national and local legal partners.Participate in individual advocacy and community education for the purposes of investigating systemic issues and forming relationships with members of the community.  Preparing community education materials (Know Your Rights flyers, two-pagers, guides, and training PowerPoints). Performing other duties as assigned, including supervision of law student interns and mentoring of volunteers and pro bono partners.

At CCLA, we provide quality civil legal representation and equal access to justice, regardless of their income. CCLA’s vision is a community where everyone has the legal resources to thrive. CCLA is currently seeking a hardworking, compassionate Attorney Healthcare & Public Benefits for our Senior Law Unit. The Attorney will  provide legal assistance and representation to seniors, aged 60 and older, throughout Broward County regarding healthcare and public benefits related issues. The Attorney will be responsible for Social Security, SSI, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance (SNAP or food stamps) and access to healthcare cases. The Senior Law Attorney also provides legal assistance and representation to seniors regarding eligibility and access to services for Medicare, Medicaid, Health Insurance Marketplace, Long-Term Care, and financial assistance programs.Position Duties Include:Provides legal advice and assistance on eligibility and access to services for Medicare, Medicaid, Health Insurance Marketplace, Long-Term-Care, and financial assistance programs, including representing clients at Agency for Healthcare Administration (AHCA) and Department of Children and Families (DCF) hearings in front of a Hearing Officer.Conducts client interviews to gather information, respond to client related phone calls, conducts discovery, investigates fact situations, reviews agency notices, reviews medical records, gathers and evaluates evidence, and interviews healthcare providers and other witnesses.Advises and represents clients in Social Security cases, including representing clients at hearings before an Administrative Law Judge (ALJ), in Appeals Council appeals, and potentially in Federal Court as applicable.Advises and represents clients in SNAP/TANF cases as needed.Advises and represents senior client on eligibility and access to services for Medicare, Medicaid, Health Insurance Marketplace, Long- Term Care, and financial assistance programs, including representing clients at hearings.Performs legal research, completes forms, and drafts letters, emails, memoranda, pleadings, and briefs. Develops strategies and arguments in preparing and presenting cases and assessing relevance of evidence. Analyzes probable outcome of cases and engages in troubleshooting and prioritizing cases.Complies with all program requirements, including efficient case management, time-keeping, completion of timely reports, professional development, and relevant CLE courses and other mandated trainings.Performs community outreach events in person and/or virtually, as well as, on social media and conducts educational trainings for staff, clients, and community providers, in accordance with CCLA’s outreach policy, and as needed. Responsible for supervising paralegals, interns, and volunteers who have been assigned to cases within their practice areas.  Communicates case progress, status, issues and outcomes to Supervising Attorney.Performs all other duties as requested by Management, Supervisors, or as required by grant(s).Position Requirements:Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school. This leader oversees the supervising attorneys of the Stay Housed LA, Lawyers Preventing and Ending Homelessness Project (PEHP), and Shriver Housing Project-LA teams. The Director will represent NLSLA at Stay Housed leadership meetings collaborate with stakeholders (community partners, pro bono providers, governmental agencies, and other legal service providers), monitor housing grant compliance and deliverables, and provide opportunities to housing advocates for professional development.The Director is responsible for monitoring issues affecting low-income individuals and families with an eye toward identifying opportunities for systemic advocacy, including impact litigation and policy advocacy, and participates in those efforts as appropriate.The Director of Housing & Homelessness Prevention is a member of the Senior Management Team and reports to the Legal Director. This position is full-time and exempt.What You’ll DoOversee housing advocacy, leading supervisors and staff attorneys to pursue all aspects of housing litigation, administrative hearing representation, and other administrative advocacy.Maintain expertise on a range of housing issues affecting low-income individuals.Oversee the supervisors of the Stay Housed LA, PEHP, and Shriver Housing Project-LA teams, providing support, mentorship and guidance.Provide formal trainings on housing law to NLSLA advocates and pro bono partners.Support NLSLA housing attorneys as needed (for example, consulting on cases, accompanying less-experienced attorneys to court, and serving as a second chair at trial).Engage in outreach and education to tenant and community groups.Manage NLSLA’s Stay Housed contract.Participate as a member of NLSLA’s Senior Team to help guide and implement the program’s vision and priorities.
