South Africa is living one of the most extreme events in its climatic history and more records are on the way.

Here's a select few of my favorite self-collected pieces of quartz from last weekend's digs. This haul has it all, including vivid rainbows, hematite phantoms and coatings, limonite coatings, the largest point I've dug, and some of the clearest pieces I've found. 🤩

Two weeks ago, I learned that the words, 'flammable' and 'inflammable' mean the *exact* same thing - and I still haven't gotten over it.

Daily maximum temperature across Australia between 1-20 October 2025 compared with the 1991-2020 October mean.

Mean 500 hPa geopotential height between 1-18 October 2025 compared with the 1991-2020 mean.

Recent negative AAO/SAM has resulted in very warm days across most of Australia, with cooler conditions confined to the south/west facing fringes. Contrasting air masses always mean wind, and that will come to a head over south east states on Wednesday.
