Tosi kiinnostava tutkimus!

Today I am tired and have a sick child home, so thinking and writing are mostly out of the question. Having a cup of tea now, and happily reading the new number of Arkeologia Nyt -magazine with several interesting articles and also a short story about the Museology course I taught during the winter.

Today I and @mervipasanen.bsky.social gave a lecture, once again, on the lady of Kirkkailanmäki dress reconstruction. The event was hosted by Lahti Historical museum, as is our reconstruction. This time we even got all three existing dresses to the same picture!

Tutkijan tärkeimpiä yhteiskunnallisia tehtäviä on vastata @hs.fi Lasten tiedekysymyksiin. Oskari 6v. kysyi, milloin harrastaminen keksittiin ja mikä oli ensimmäinen harrastus. Ei mikään helppo kysysymys, mutta vastasin parhaani mukaan.

At #pelimuseo the Odysseus exhibition was small yet captivating, showcasing the incredible amount of volunteer work hours spent at producing the biggest scifi larp in Finnish gaming history.

Today we ended our winter holiday at #vapriikki in Tampere. Kids were mesmerized by the #songlines exhibition’s stories of Seven sisters and Australian art and the landscape.

Today I found especially inspiring Sam Bennett’s talk on teaching teenagers from New York how to mend clothes - and how this kind of slow craft practise was both difficult and important to young people living in a fast moving world.

One of the highlights of the conference was Timo Rissanen’s talk on Australian leather title sashes, as it illustrated perfectly how certain aspects of our culture are not researched or recorded, if they are used in subcultures that are considered marginal.

Great two days of #artefacta2025 conference are drawing up close. The keynote ending the day is given by anthropologist Daniel Miller online, as the agency of things was demonstrated to him with the misplacement of his passport. The last row of the seminar room is engaged in craft activities.

Fortunately, we got help from Estonian craft specialist Jaana Ratas, who has lots of experience working with spirals and horsehair. Jaana gave tips on how the stiff material could be treated to be able to use it, and ended up doing the actual ornaments for the costume reconstruction.

The spiral ornaments in this early 13th grave were interesting to study, as they had no exact parallels found in Finland. Moreover, they were threaded in with horsehair, a material we were not familiar to work with. After studying the patterns, we learned that we need help with the reconstruction.

Most difficult thing here was to weave loosely enough, as the fabric will be felted. The original, found from early 13th c. female grave from Ravattula Ristimäki near Turku, is one of the earliest finds of fabric socks in Northern Europe. It was dyed red with madder (Rubia tinctoria).

This week, I have mostly been weaving. It is a hobby, but also part of the way how I build understanding of archaelogical textiles I study. This fabric is for the socks of the #ravattuladress, #ancientcostume from late #ironage Finland.
