(10/10) Not the time for a typical, lifelong politician. Clear choice: experience vs incompetence; plan vs. slogan; calm vs. chaos. Others will fail (Polievre?) or fall short (Freeland?). He knows how business works, he says. Goal: build a strong economy that works for all. Impt: Fairness, humility

(9/10) Outsider? He's not member of cabinet, caucus or the PM. Rather he's an occasional advisor, but also to other countries. Not all his advice was taken by Lib cabinet; he didn't know final cabinet decision in advance. He will make clear policy changes. His single focus: get economy back on track

(8/10) Carney: "I’ve dealt with Trump, he’s transactional. Need to have best outside-option; don’t show your cards, don’t take cards off table. Unity is most impt. A very delicate situation. Need to stand up for Canada. Can’t do that when you're insulting half the country (i.e., Pierre P).

(7/10): Carbon tax: must be replaced with something at least as effective or more, with same impact in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, but one that also makes companies more competitive, creates more jobs, makes households more whole. What is needed is a comprehensive approach, not soundbites.

(6/10) Carney's critique of Trudeau & team: They let their attn wander from econ'y. too often. Growth too slow, wages too low, rent &groceries too $$ for too many; spend too much, but invest too little. Middle class taxes too high. Not ready for AI & energy transitions. Underlying economic problems

(5/10) Ideas of far left (eg. NDP) won’t enable Canada to achieve its full potential. Spending & subsidies treat symptoms only, but doen’t cure the disease. We can’t redistribute wealth that we don’t have; can’t support the vulnerable or defend the country with a weak economy.

(4/10) Populist ideas are naïve and dangerous; Politicians (like @pierrepoilievre) don’t understand how the economy & how society work. Soundbites don’t solve problems but hurt people. Poilievre seeks endorsements from Trump & Musk. After @ABDanielleSmith, Poilievre worst person to send to negotiate

(3/10): The Mantra “Canada is broken” is very dangerous. Conservatives (like @pierrepoilievre) don't want to fix things, but want license to demolish, destroy, and weaken the institutions & services upon which we all depend. Slogans, slander, soundbites> attack institutions & exploit vulnerabilities

(2/10): Assumption #2: System is not working as it should. People can't afford rent, homes, find doctors; we’re not prepared for AI revolution or climate change, threatening livelihood. Canada: “best country in the world, but could still be even better.” People want change “but not just any change.”

My summary notes of @MarkJCarney’s Liberal leadership launch today: (1/10): First assumption: the times are anything but ordinary; we are facing unprecedented challenges; normal is over and slogans, slander & soundbites won’t work. It is not the time for life-long politicians like @PierrePoilievre

Spent a little time on “X” again. I am trying to find words for what I’m feeling. It is like an abyss has opened up and all manner of demons (not just bots) have emerged, i.e., our worst instincts given license (and fuel) to arise, to cut down and devour all that is good, true and beautiful.

I'm not a Newfoundlander or a Quebecer, but it is wonderful, joyful to see politics at its best today. No toxicity, no bitterness, no grandstanding or partisanship--but the opposite. They did a deal with view to "their grandchildren" and in partnership with First Nations. Set a great example. Bravo.
