I have to say, I've both fudged dice rolls and enforced them. Mostly this happens when I work with children. I don't want a character to die from a single bad roll but I also don't let them beg when one of their rolls go poorly.

It was, yes. I don't get to hear KSE that often. They occasionally get played on the radio here, but not often.

Lmao! You're right! The way it was displaying in my feed it was showing text from one comment and the video for KSE! 🤦‍♂️

I've thought about that. They would roll better, for sure. The big problem would be mixing them up with d8s, but that's really all I can forsee.

One of my favorites is a local fungi, Old Man of the Woods!

I've had some really good discussions on here. I just never know what to post.

These are really classy looking!

Especially for quick reference rules sheets. I like how a lot of print copy rules have these on the inside covers of their books. Being able to use the PDF version to print off those four pages for players is incredibly helpful!

I won't use them unless I have so few items that I am physically carrying them.

What really frustrated me recently is that Walmart has been so short staffed that they have CLOSED half of the self-checkouts, creating an even bigger backup.

What is a good solution? Personally, I like what was done with Cairn and Shadowdark: offer quick start rules zines! This usually has enough info for players to make new characters, can be purchased for less expense, and gives each player something to learn from!

What are your solutions?

There seems to be a discussion about whether or not TTRPG players read the rules?

At first I thought this was ludicrous until someone mentioned that there is usually only one copy of the rulebook floating around the group.

Remembering my own various games... Yeah, this is pretty accurate!

3rd edition had a variation on this with prestige classes (which I liked) but it switched to being almost entirely mechanical. 5ed has it built into the basic character classes and you don't have to earn anything, you just choose a path at level 3.

This might be controversial but I enjoyed the idea of Class Kits from 2ed D&D. They had some mechanical requirements and some RP requirements and that blend of mechanics with a unique payoff was really fun!

I see it from both sides. Yes, you can MAKE any system work BUT there's a good chance that there's one better suited to what you want to achieve.

Some good tips here and for those who’ve missed it, ours will be back soon I’m just still figuring out a few things about how to reformat it and make it worth both our time doing and your time reading

I know I'm pretty late to the party but Delicious In Dungeon is a GREAT source of inspiration! The way it makes you think about dungeon ecology is invaluable.

I feel like the customization aspect of this type of system is something that can be explored more. What do you think?

Fire by itself just makes something you touch combust. Blast is just a projection of force. Combine Fire and Blast and you can make a Fireball. Learn the Time tag and you can make a Delayed Blast Fireball.

I feel like there is a lot of potential for use in magic and spells with a system like this. Imagine a wizard combining three tags into a single use (Like Epic Spell Wars card game). Instead of learning specific spells they learn magical tags that they combine to create effects.

But what if a player wants to "upgrade" it? In fantasy tropes we have a few examples: mithril and adamant. Making it mithril would change the heavy descriptor to "concealed", meaning you can hide its use. Adamant would change the resilient tag to fortified, adding extra resistance to damage.

My idea is to use a set number of tags for "special" items that players can improve throughout play. Let's say they begin with standard chainmail armor. It could begin as flexible, heavy, and resilient. That signifies that you remain mobile in it, it has weight, and it resists damage.

I'm looking at ICRPG and FATE mechanics and how tags and aspects work. In FATE it's a core mechanic and how the game works. In ICRPG they're more like notes or flavor text. I would like to find a way to bridge the gap and give them a mechanical function but not have that dominate the system.

Hey #ttrpgCommunity!

Have you ever played a game that didn't rely on combat to resolve conflicts? What was the system? And how did the mechanics encourage non-combat resolution?

Which is why so many people refer to D&D combat as a "meat grinder". Enemies become mere targets and a means to gain XP and loot.
