Like so many of the people here, my formative years were spent in the Bush era, shaped by that disastrous presidency and its disastrous overseas wars. It shaped my priors around overseas wars and my skepticism.

This will not work out well and will instead just lead to needless death of innocents.

Hi! Please go ahead and send me an email and I will look into this. Feel free to include any ticket numbers or responses if there have been any! Mcoffey@arlingtonva.us

It’s a rough intersection (I live just a few blocks away) and I’m not sure what the answer is but happy to find out!

Not now, not ever 🫑

I spent nearly $4,000 on yard signs between the primary and the general for my election.

I only spent $45k TOTAL so that’s nearly 10% of my whole campaign on signs.

Thats a lot of money that didn’t go towards actually contacting voters with information about me…

This is my passion project

Signs are:
- bad for the environment
- bad for traffic safety
- deeply expensive for campaigns
- ineffective at educating voters

The county cannot:
- adequately enforce EXISTING ordinance let alone additional restrictions
- fine the campaigns
- allow residents to enforce

I hope everyone will stay engaged in this process

Key dates are below, incl hearings on budget/expenditures (March 24) & on tax rate/revenue (March 26) as well as all of the work session dates

You are ALWAYS welcome to email us at countyboard@arlingtonva.us or me directly at mcoffey@arlingtonva.us

A few level-setting facts:

Virginia requires us to set ONE property tax rate for all real property. Cant have different tax rates for luxury, commercial, etc

Deferred maintenance/capital $ gives us one time $ but lower revenue likely to be a multi year problem

Use of reserves also only one time $

23.02.2026 13:20 β€” πŸ‘ 5    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

On the costs side, everything we do is more expensive now than a year ago. Particularly on employee compensation and healthcare (health insurance is up 10% alone). Inflation doesn’t just hit individuals, it’s hitting us hard and each dollar doesn’t go as far AND there are less dollars

23.02.2026 13:20 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

On the revenue side, our office space is worth WAY less than it used to be with remote work + uncertainty around federal contracts. Tourism is way down (esp international tourism) which hits hotel tax as well as sales/meals tax. The shut down hit us hard. We’ve lost federal funding in a few areas.

Saturday the Board received the manager’s presentation of the *proposed* budget

Over the next ~8 weeks, we will have work sessions and public hearings to discuss

We are closing a $37 million gap this year.

I honestly also wonder that (falls church and Fairfax also are sign-free comparisons!) but do not have the capacity to data crunch myself so if someone would like to look into this and get back to me…

20.02.2026 00:51 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

I have been advised that strategy (I did suggest it, I would love to personally enforce) is likely to create legal and police issues of people stealing each other’s signs, retribution, etc and it would be a massive headache to sort out

Or is this an invitation for more creative online/digital campaigns

19.02.2026 19:20 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

ALSO no matter what, signs on private property and at polling locations will still be allowed

19.02.2026 18:05 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

What I hear from my β€œnormal” not politically engaged neighbors is signs are visual clutter & they simply do not pay attention to them. Signs don’t communicate what a candidate cares about/wants to do, they don’t even convey the election date, so ppl would have to be motivated to google it all anyway

19.02.2026 17:59 β€” πŸ‘ 4    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 3    πŸ“Œ 0

& enforcement is really ineffective when NO ONE follows the rules - we take them down, more pop up. We can’t enforce current limits so new limits will have same problem

Fairfax, falls church, & Alexandria ban signs completely & I have heard nothing that indicates it hurt their civic participation

19.02.2026 17:59 β€” πŸ‘ 9    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 5    πŸ“Œ 0

We can’t fine the campaigns because we have no way of proving who put the sign there - in theory, I could put out a bunch of signs that look like an opponents in order to get them fined

Enforcement requires taking our code inspectors away from responding to building, construction, safety etc

MEDIAN SIGN HATERS: NOW IS YOUR TIME

Staff presented potential changes in Arlington's sign ordinance to the Zoning Ordinance Committee (ZOCO) this week.

Not all Board Mems are convinced that "get rid of median signs" is best.

Looking forward to more housing in Clarendon!

This is a site plan I opined on as a regular normal neighbor back in 2022…it was approved in 2023 but with all the financial market barriers has been slow to move forward - thrilled to see it actually happening!!!

Now that we are (mostly) thru the snow, I’m excited to share that I had the opportunity to be on my first ever podcast!

We talked about a lot of things but in particular what it took to launch a campaign at 27 & what public service looks like for the β€œnext generation”
