Wild to see how techbro capitalism has arrived at a stage of Great Leap Forward enforced utopianism where *everything* is legitimized by the inevitably coming golden age, who's immanentizing the eschaton now, huh

Reading an interesting 1968 paper by comparative lit scholar Michael Holquist on the connection between Utopia & chess & play/games in general - here's a Soviet porcelain chess set he discusses, "the Czarist Pawns show labour enchained"

"‘Busy sellers,’ i.e. sellers and resellers of their services. They are to be identified as the Swiss."

Yes! The mercenary peoples' name "Zapoletans" is basically also suggesting this, see this footnote. The editor (Edward Surtz) very briefly provides some more historical context in the intro but without further sources. Anyway, CHEESE FOR THE CHEESE GOD

"In an interview with Henry VIII in 1516, Sebastian Giustinian “dilated on the inhumanity of the Germans, who burn, destroy, and kill in all directions; the ferocity of the Swiss was notorious, and no sex or age was exempt from their inhumanity” (LP, 2, No. 1991)."

The reputation for brutality seems to be the usual argument here, here's the footnote from the 1964 edition. Apparently some marginalia in an early edition referred to the Swiss but other people argue that More might have meant Ottoman mercenaries. The Swiss interpretation seems more popular tho

"This people will battle for the Utopians against any mortals whatsoever because their service is hired at a rate higher than they could get anywhere else. The Utopians, just as they seek good men to use them, so enlist these villains to abuse them. When need requires, they thrust them under the tempting bait of great promises into greatest perils. Generally a large proportion never returns to claim payment, but the survivors are honestly paid what has been promised them to incite them again to like deeds of daring. The Utopians do not care in the least how many Zapoletans they lose, thinking that they would be the greatest benefactors to the human race if they could relieve the world of all the dregs of this abominable and impious people."

The extra nasty part is that the Utopians do this with an ulterior motive of effectively killing off the entire barbarian horde! One interesting detail tho is that they "will battle [...] against any mortals", which would then exclude the Undead and other Chaos armies

Apropos Renaissance Humanist Fantasy Battle, here's another passage where the Utopians hire a tribe of Chaos Barbarians to wage their wars (usually identified as an allusion to Swiss mercenaries in later scholarship)

Seeing that it's a Jacobin piece, I guess "we" must mean the socialist world government which will be established, like, tomorrow due to the inevitable uprising of the masses, which is basically happening now, or at least any minute

"They do play two games not unlike chess. The first is a battle of numbers in which one number plunders another. The second is a game in which the vices fight a pitched battle with the virtues. In the latter is exhibited very cleverly, to begin with, both the strife of the vices with one another and their concerted opposition to the virtues; then, what vices are opposed to what virtues, by what forces they assail them openly, by what stratagems they attack them indirectly, by what safeguards the virtues check the power of the vices, by what arts they frustrate their designs; and, finally, by what means the one side gains the victory."
