Great conversation on @kqedforum.bsky.social with Mina Kim today about #ICE's latest #immigration detention facility in #California... that's operating without permits.

Bay Area Immigrant Advocates Sue the Trump Administration to End Courthouse Arrests | KQED
The suit also calls on U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to stop detaining people for days in temporary holding rooms without beds and proper hygiene.
Since May, #ICE has been arresting people at #immigration courts in No. California and detaining people for days in SF holding rooms only meant for a few hours - no beds, hygiene or medical care - lawyers say. Now advocates are suing over both. @kqednews.kqed.org

Trump Administrationโs Plans for ICE Detention on Bay Area Military Base Are On Hold | KQED
Two Bay Area congressmen who opposed the plans to build an immigration jail at Travis Air Force Base said the Department of Defense confirmed the proposal is off the table for now.
Last April, I broke the news that #ICE was looking to put an #immigration #detention facility at #TravisAFB in the Bay Area. Opposition by members of Congress and the local community followed. And the Trump administration backed off.

Californiaโs Newest Immigration Facility Is Also Its Biggest. Is It Operating Legally? | KQED
The Mojave Desert facility reopened by the Trump administration has begun housing ICE detainees, but lacks at least one key city permit.
The Trump administration is rapidly expanding immigration detention. The latest move for ICE in CA? A 2,500-bed private prison in the desert w questionable plumbing. And so far, it's operating without a business license.

We're well over the 50 incidents documented in our investigation now. Here's one from this week from @opb.org, reporting that a young girl was also in the the van of Mam-speaking farmworkers from Guatemala when immigration agents broke the driver window. www.opb.org/article/2025...

Bay Area Immigrant Groups React to Trumpโs โDraconianโ New Travel Ban | KQED
The presidentโs travel ban blocks citizens from Iran, Afghanistan, Haiti, Eritrea and Yemen from entering the U.S., among others.
โThe travel ban will break our countryโs promise for a safe future in the US for all Afghans who worked alongside and kept safe US military personnel in Afghanistan.โ

This Ethiopian Woman Was Tortured by Her Government. The US is Sending Her Home Anyway | KQED
The Trump Administration has turned the remaining sliver of hope for people fleeing torture into what experts fear is a fast track to deportation. And itโs trying to keep it a secret.
Important reporting by my CA Newsroom colleagues Mark Betancourt, with Mike Kessler.
Trump administration "quietly and deliberately erased" legal protections for people seeking refuge from #torture. "What remains of the process now takes place under a veil of secrecy."

SF Immigration Attorney Says First Amendment Should Protect Mahmoud Khalil From Deportation | KQED
Khalilโs San Francisco-based lawyer believes the outcome of the case could serve as a litmus test for dissent in the second Trump era.
โYou cannot deport someone under the laws for their beliefs." - veteran SF #immigration attorney Marc Van Der Hout
I sat down with Van Der Hout to talk about what it's like representing Mahmoud Khalil -- and what his case means for the rest of us.
